What OS to pick

Post by Nonsense Man » Tue Mar 27, 2007 10:12 am

Well im thinking of building a gaming rig and i was wondering what would be the best operating system to pick would be the specs are:
Hard Drive Seagate Barracuda 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache
Video Card GeForce 8800GTS 320MB
Ram CORSAIR XMS2 2GB
Processor Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Conroe 2.4GHz
Motherboard GIGABYTE GA-965P-DS3 LGA 775 Intel P965 Express
PSU Antec True Power Trio TP3-650 ATX12V 650W
Sound Card Creative Sound Blaster SB0570 Audigy SE 7.1 Channels 24-bit 96KHz
Drive NEC Black 18X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 8X DVD+R DL 18X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 12X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2M Cache E-IDE

So what operating system should i get for this and another question would be do i need a "professional" gaming mouse. Oh and if anyone wants me too ill post the links to the products on Newegg.

Dude, for a gaming rig, you HAVE to get Windows...
That's what near all games are made for, Windows...

With those specs, get Vista Pro OEM.

No, you don't need a professional gaming mouse, no real advantage.

But a Logitech G15 keyboard is defiantly a plus!

Yes that's true.

I've had some problems with Home premium...

I recommend Vista Pro, XP, and 95...
And Linux but not for gaming...
And Mac OSX but only for like, media production like movies, music, Photoshoping etc...

Get XP Media Center...

Not pro, not home... Media Center...

Out of all the Windows in the world... XP Media Center is the best...
Followed by 95, 98SE, and MS-DOS...

Nah. Sounds like he wants something that can run more than five programs.

XP Media Center or Vista Ultimate are the two best options for your particular scenario.

Which one you choose depends on how much you care about DirectX 10 for future gaming.

Sounds like you should have yourself a pretty rockin' system by the time all is said and done though! :D

Hmm... If you JUST want to play games and it's only hooked up to a monitor, get XP Professional. Less fluff to deal with. If you're playing games and it's hooked up to a TV get XP MCE so it can pull double duty as a media center PC. If you're loaded and want to be absolutely future-proof get Vista Home Premium. Home Basic is a waste of money (It's basically XP SP3) and Ultimate comes will a lot of extraneous fluff.

You don't need a "professional" "gaming" mouse. Really they aren't much different from "non gaming" mice if you look past shine and button placement. Finding a comfortable mouse is more important. Go to the store and try a few out. Then you can go online and buy the mouse you liked best. As long as it's optical it will server your needs just fine.

What you should do is scrounge up an old minitower case. That way you can surprise people when you start playing [insert big complicated game here] on what looks like an old Pentium. The computer equivelant to a sleeper! (Sleepers are awesome. 8))

Get Windows XP 64-bit. Don't get Vista, I do not recommend it for gaming now, the drivers for graphics cards SUCK! nVidia themselves cannot get them right!

Now even though I see you have a DX10 graphics card, I still don't recommend Vista. If I were recommending Vista, I would get either Vista Business or Vista Ultimate.

Why choose 1? I dont have as good of a computer as you, and I am Tri-booting. Personnally, I would recommend Vista (although I don't like Vista) and if your farmilliar with Unix, PC-BSD. You could always go with a version of Linix if you wanted as well. I am Tri-booting Windows XP, PC-BSD, and Mac OS X86 (no flaming! its for moviemaking only, i swear! :))
