One caveat I have heard for emulators is the ones for old computers, since the computer itself contained a system ROM. No idea if that's true, but there is a (legal) commercial c64 emu out there.

All Emulators are Legal, at least for Gaming machines.
Comercial ROMS are Illegal.
Anyone have a list of Good Emulators for a
200mhz system?
Also I would like a List of good emulators for a 500mhz system, but for some reason I cant get n64 Emulators to work on my 500mhz machine and havnt even tried it on my 200mhz machine.

Most computer emulators require a system ROM/BIOS (same thing) in order to work. Just like PS1/PS2/DC emus.

Anyone can have the emulator, even if you don't own the system. ROMs you can not legally have unless you have the game and you made the backup yourself.Felino wrote:And then it is leagl to use the emulater, if you own the system already.
Thanks to those that have listed the Playstation emulator: ePSXe. I'll look into getting that and seeing if it works.

Ok, I just registered because I see a couple of HUGE mistakes in this thread.
You are 1/3rd right. Visualboy Advance is indeed by far the best emulator for GBA. For GB/GBC though, it would be better to use a dedicated emulator (I can strongly advise BGB, this emulator has just the right amount of features but no bloat it was also the first emulator to support the imfamous demotronic demo. I think it supports all games with a few bugs in a very small percentage of games, I've got to ask beware himself to know this) because VBA is clearly aimed more at GBA and therefore has a lot of bugs in less known GB/GBC games.

BGB can be downloaded at http://bgb.bircd.org/
This is NOT true. If you download a commercial rom at all (more on this later) you are doing something illegal, this 24 hours rule is bs.The whole subject of ROMs is always a little fuzzy in terms of legality. It's legal to download a ROM you don't own, as long as you delete it within 24 hours.
This, sadly, is also false. You cannot download a commercial rom at all. The only way provided by law to legally own ROMs of commercial games is to dump them yourself. If you download a rom you would, in effect, be breaking a copy protection according to most countries. This being said, I don't think you'll be busted for downloading a couple of ROMs.As far as I know, it's also legal to download ROMs of games you OWN and KEEP them indefinitely.
I see "GBO" said a lot in this thread, it's DMG or just GB.GB/GBC/GBA - Visualboyadvance, everything else pails in comparison.

Are you sure? I could've sworn that I once read the 24hr rule thing on Nintendo Of America's site itself! I should probably do some more research on this matter.

A quick read on Wikipedia (your number one source for mostly-accurate information!) shows that villadelfia is right: the 24 hour rule is bogus. Making rom backups of your games is generally considered illegal, as well as downloading roms for games you own. The only exception is when the copyright holder has specifically stated in writing that their property can be freely distributed.
That being said, registering simply to point out someone's mistakes makes for rather poor first impressions, villadelfia

How are you going to get in trouble for downloading roms?
If they were that much of a problem, companies would put the rockets on heat-seek. Now their just stray shots.
We all have done it once.
SS
EDIT: I do not endorse illegal emulation of roms.
