WoW on a private server blows. Not only is there 1-3 seconds of lag that instatly kills you before you know you're being attacked at times, but private servers alst I check could only hold 20 people before getting really laggy. Not 20 per area. 20 in the game.

If you want WoW, try it for 10 days free. Personally, I played it for 3 weeks before I got sick of its repetitiveness. Kill mosters, level up, do quests to kill mosters and level faster. ALthough I've heard if you make it to level 60 (now 70) it becomes a whole new game, since you don't level anymore. It's about killing monsters to get items.

eew World of Warcrack! :P

Kingdom of Loathing, while most don't call it a "real" MMORPG, is still a lot of fun. (Plus it's free and you can quit anytime you want. :P) If you do join, PM me your name there and I'll add you to my clan whitelist. (My username there is the same as it is everywhere but YTMND.)

As far as free, traditional, MMOs go, I'd have to say Shards of Dalaya is the best I've seen. It's a free EverQuest shard (server). But it isn't just bog-standard EQ. They took the game and re-worked it. Everything (outside of the graphics and zones and things) are completely new. As in, different storyline, all different quests, different items, etc. They made a lot of improvements on the game mechanics as well. If you're a fan of the original EQ, then you'd most likely enjoy it. Though if you're a graphics whore, stay away. These're 1999 graphics to the extreme. But I like them. And it has the advantage of running on slower computers. Not even Sony's servers can do that, because they've updated stuff.

You don't even have to own EQ discs to play it. You can go to Sony's site and download the "Everquest Trilogy" thing and use that to play SoD. Simple, easy as pie. Mm. Pie.

I actually used to enjoy SoD so much that I made a montly donation of $25 so I could get the perks and stuff. That says something, seeing as that's more than you'd pay a month to play WoW or something.

I've heard good things about many online rpgs that require you to pay for the game. Poor you poor-you's.

I don't know, there have been a lot of good, free mmo games. I guess if folks need rpgs, that can be limiting, but most other genres have at least a good selection of free mmo play on commercial games, or totally free ones.

I used to do a lot of subspace. It's totally free and offers good action.
Another one I play is Freelancer. Even though the software's not free (like $5 if you can find it) there's still a lot of free mmo play to be had.

I can't stand mmorpgs though. terribly loose and boring storylines. It means that people tend to either mill around in groups (usually in town), or go off to try to find ways to ruin other people's fun.
