I remember a while back we had a nice discussion about our favorite game endings, and then listed them accordingly (with spoiler warnings, of course). So I thought that it'd be fun to talk about our favorite game openings, listing the game, system, and some details on it. Here goes mine!
With all the flashy graphics we have nowadays, opening cutscenes are all so shiny anymore. Not to say that's a bad thing, I love it; but sometimes, we tend to forget our pre-16-bit brethren! So my vote goes to the opening of Ninja Gaiden 2: The Dark Sword of Chaos! It has awesome music, an evil laugh from a kickass bad guy, and best of all, an 8-bit movie intro-esque cutscene! Rather than me go through and detail it all, why not just watch for yourselves?

The Seifer/Squall fight in FFVIII is comes to my mind as being awesome, but I tend to like everything about that game. Dunno what you consider an "opening" but if you wait on the main screen of MK: Armageddon, there's an awesome fight scene. Also.... Hmm.... Oh! Diablo II has some awesome scenes throughout the whole game.

The FFVIII opening is tottaly amazing but that's probably mostly because of the incredible music.
It's very hard to choose a favorite intro but these are some I find very good:
Soul Calibur 2
Chrono Trigger
Zelda Link's Awakening (amazing for gameboy at that time)
FF: IIIDS,IVAdvance,VI,VIII,IX,X
basically everyhting Square makes has good intro's.
and Shenmue off course

Nice! That brings back some great memories. The day I bought the original Gran Turismo was the day video games became more than just a "game" to me. I had forgotten just how great it looked all those years ago on the PS1!bicostp wrote:Gran Turismo. Man that was INCREDIBLE back in '98 (especially since I jumped right from VCS to Playstation )

Speaking of Gran Turismo, my pick for favorite opening (off the top of my head) is the intro for Gran Turismo 4 on the PS2. This is the only intro I can recall seeing that made me pick my jaw up off the floor after seeing it. It's a little over 3 minutes long, gorgeous (the grainy Youtube video below doesn't do it justice), and when it switches midway through to in game graphics with Van Halen's "Panama" rocking out in the background it becomes an experience unlike any I can recall with regards to this subject.
The fact that the game plays every bit as good as the intro looks and sounds is a testament to the great work the geniuses at Polyphony Digital deliver time in and time out with regards to the Gran Turismo series.
