Well, I've become interested in buying a PSP. I'd like to get all this homebrew running on it. I needn't go into the details of how this could be difficult.
What do you think my chances are of getting a downgradeable PSP? I thought I might have more luck if I buy used, but used PSP's could have been returned just as easily because of the user wanting to downgrade.

Buy used from EB Games and spend the extra $20 for a 1 year warranty. Their policy (at least the one here, and I assume they're all the same as they're corporate owned) is that:
1) If you return your PSP for any reason you can buy a new warranty for $20 more which lasts for a year after the date you purchase the new warranty.
2) If the dumb clerk forgot to remove a memstick when buying someone's PSP, they can't charge you for it (i've gotten a 32 meg and 1 gig stick free from this).
3) They don't seem to mind you looking at the PSP before you buy it (after all it is used).
My second PSP was bought from them. I checked the motherboard and firmware right in the shop. The battery was dead, and they even gave me a wall outlet to use! Hope that's a help.
Also vb, I bet you learn lots of interesting things from all them!

Well, I ended up buying one of those nice Entertainment Packs with the ATV game. I ended up with firmware 2.71, so I'm happy enough.
Annoyingly, my PSP seems to be having a heck of a lot of trouble connecting and staying connected to my wireless network.
I need to learn myself how to downgrade and get one of those custom firmwares!

Please do lots of reading before attempting to downgrade. If you have a TA-082 mobo, for instance, the downgrader is very different.

Oh Dear Lord- Somebody's god must like me!
I discovered to my dismay that I have a TA-082, so what should have been a complex proceedure was instead SUPER COMPLEX. I forged ahead without taking the care I should have- the only sign of HEN-D working was how it turned the screen some colors and restarted the PSP- and yet now I have a TA-082 with 1.50 firmware!
Now...I just need to figure out what to...DO with it Will the newest custom firmwares also allow me to play the newest commercial games released? Can I download the RocoCoco thing without worrying about it screwing around with my precious firmware?
Anymore excitement like this and I'm liable to have a heart attack!

Yes, 3.03 OE plays all commercial games both in UMD and ISO form, in addition to emulators, both from 1.5 and the PS1 emulator. I dunno what this RocoCoco thing is, but I wouldn't recommend downloading anything directly from Sony. I may be wrong and it may be completely ok, but better safe than sorry.

Turned out to be named LocoRoco, and it worked fine- nice and quirky game, too.
I just tested out PS1 emulation with some generic Destruction Derby (it was only 8MB ) game. Worked very well, though it would be nice to have the screen stretched out a little. Now I'm busy "acquiring" Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.

Oh LocoRoco. That's an interesting game. I have the ISO. Also, when playing PS1 games, press the home button. Somewhere in that menu is a screen size adjustment. Fullscreen FTW!
