Something based on the Mac Mini is definitely the way to go. It's the only thing small, powerful, AND affordable. You'd be hard pressed to buy an actual Mini-ITX motherboard with the required performance abilities, and then it would cost an arm and a leg.

If you could just find a Mac Mini motherboard, you'd probably save a hundred or two. You don't really need the case, Cd drive, and original hdd, after all.

No. The original Xbox only has something like a 733 mhz Pentium 3. I've seen people throw away better machines than that. Asking it to run Linux, and emulate Windows (or an entire x86 PC) is silly. It could work, in theory, but it would be way too slow to be usable for a fancy game.

lol, yeah, I thought of that today while I was at work. Forgot about all the OS overhead and that fun stuff. I'de really like to see this project up and running... but then, I'de like to see a lot of things... Like a Wii in stock somewhere or the PS2 slims to cost under $100.
Ah, can't win them all.
Cheers

I hope they port WoW to one of the next gen consoles soon, but with my luck it would be a PS3 exclusive :) although "WoWii" does look like it would be an awesome marketing tag.

I use my Toshiba satellite to run WoW and it only bogs down in Ironforge with a lot of characters on screen. I may try increased the RAM from 512MB to 1 Gig to see if that helps.

you used to be able to send your xbox to some business that would replace the processor with one exactly double the clock speed, and with a switch to cut the clock speed in half, to play actual xbox games at normal speed

and upgrade the ram from 34MB to 64 (you can do this yourself not too hard... only v1.5 and below)

It already has 64 MB. You can upgrade it to 128.

even with a faster cpu and more ram the bottom line is it will still not be able to run wow.

it will not have enough ram and its gpu and graphics ram are not enough to run it.

xbox is just a stripped down computer but its not really that powerful compared to the just the min requirements to run wow.

I can't wait for UMPC prices to come down, around $900 for a cheap one right now. Here's a video of one running WoW just to taunt you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fd6vuOjcjxU

wow, not too shabby!I just like the notion of a more custom controler and all that joy for WoW. I was trying to figure out how to get around using a mouse... but playing wow with a touchscreen is horrible. I'de be more interested in a WoW controller than the portable itself at this point... There has to be something more fun thatn a keyboard... besides... if you can figure out a controller that works, mebbe then it can go to console form :)

An analog eraser nub 'trackpoint' the right size and senitivity would be a good on the go replacement for a mouse to my thinking. Many UMPCs have and eraser nub on the right and buttons for it on the left, and my PCp prototype had the layout the same way. I'm not a WoW player, so I can't test out the layout for you.

You might want to pick up one of these to play with: http://www.meci.com/product_info.php/pr ... id/2200370 (note: $20 minimum order last I checked)

The buttons on the side of the unit are useless for gaming, but wiring buttons to a another set on the opposite side(or for the left hand as stand alone) would be good.
