GAH! Darn school content filter!

Post by bicostp » Fri Mar 24, 2006 3:07 pm

Ok I'm really getting pissed off at the school's content filter. Not because it's there, oh no. It's because it's freakin "special" not "unique" special, "Olympics" special. Please don't hate me for this comment! *wink smiley*

Sites I cannot access (there's a lot more, but here are the nbotable ones I have tried):
- Reason: Proxy
- Reason: Hacking
- Reason: Proxy
- Reason: Proxy
- Reason: Cult/Occult (read on)
- Reason: Weapons

(Some of the) General stuff you can't get to:
- Proxy Reason: Proxy
- Nessie, Bigfoot, yeti Reason: Cult/Occult
- The WayBack machine. Reason: "proxy/firewall aviodance"

Stuff you CAN get to:
- How to make, place and detonate your own plastic explosives
- Sites where you can buy AK-47s
- other stuff like this

It's ridiculous. I don't have a problem with the weapons or drugs being blocked, but Hackaday and the official Bigfoot the monster truck website?!
the company wrote:Cult/Occult: Sites that promote or offer methods, means of instruction, or other resources to affect or influence real events through the use of spells, curses, magic powers, satanic or supernatural beings.
What the hell does THAT have to do with <a href=" ... >THIS?!</a>

Another thing; my friend (who is into Airsoft) was looking up pictures of the latest Airsoft gun he wants to get, so he went to Google Images and looked it up. The thumbnails showed up, but when you click them it blocks access to the sites. So he just opens up ImageShack, hosts it there and views it.

Apparently the system is running <a href=" ... nicWALL</a>. Any way you know of that I can get to Hackaday, Engadget, and other such electronics sites? I mean besides using WinHTTrack to mirror them or going through butt-slow Google Translate or Babelfish? (both of which work)

I'm not saying the school shouldn't have a content filter, I'm saying they should have a smarter one. :|

Think! They're not trying to block sites that are bad, just the sites that are fun!

Install Firefox or Opera if you can, the site blocker might be restricted to only IE.
Multipe threads containing different Proxies (some of which might not be blocked):

If it's a good one it'll filter all ethernet. Use a https proxy, most filters don't do https

Yeah, they blocked hackaday at my school because it said "Computer hacking". Jeez, theirs only one way I can express my anger for the school filter:

I'd imagine right now you wish you were a cuttlefish...

yeah high school security systems were stupid if i remember correctly

the easiest is to just hurry up and graduate, go to college, be a responsible adult

I remember seeing people download Halo on our library computer and having lan parties in the library

Also, they could go to "happy " sites if you catch my drift...

I don't know if we have a filter. I can get on Gmail and stuff. I generally don't use the computers because the general rule is no games and school business only. In middle school, our German teacher let them download Unreal Tournament, Doom, etc. Yep. Crazy stuff.

I can't get onto sites, becuase they say some of them are "tasteless/gross."
PSp is about 70% done, just have to do the controller and case.

Without games my life would have no meaning.

Step 1: Get this:
Step 2: Get hosting with php
Step 3: Install it (upload php files)
Step 4: Get your site blocked at school ;)
