And I would get a AMD Athlon 64 X2 processor, as its both dual core, and 64 bit.

i say asus mobo. i am really pleased with my asus p4p800. the "overclock AI" feature or whatever its called is really handy...
go for 2 gigs dual-channel style. it dosent matter as much if they come in a kit, my pc is proof of that (2 no-name-brand sticks, purchased 2 years apart. works fine in dual-channel mode). but get a kit if its the same price. get DDR2
im usually an intel fanboy, but i just cant argue with the athalon 64. for gaming it kicks ass.
2000$ is seriously a lot of money for a comptuer these days. this computer will kick ass
oh, and dont buy alienware... they are seriously overpriced.
watercooling?

Eh? I think you may be mistaking overclock AI for something esle.
All (the good ones) motherboards have a manual overclocking feature.

It seems like amd athlon is the way to go. My parents are thinking of getting fibre optic for our internet, cause its only $5more per month what we're paying now. Does anyone know where that ranks in terms of speed? I haven't looked at the specs yet.

Well i doubt your getting a "fiber line" for only 5 bucks more but i was reading a thing a while back on howstuffworks.com about vfdsl or somthing like that, it uses a fiber line but you can only get in it select areas.
I think we are getting ahead of ourselfs with the "overclocking idea" If he is asking us to build him a pc then he probably wont be overclocking.
Are you looking for a value pc or a straight up "kick A" computer?
To my knowledge, intel chips are better suited for multi-tasking unless your using an amd x2 "dual core" and amd chips are better suited for process heavy aplications? "am i wrong in thinking this"
Personally i think stick with an AMD cpu because you get a better value.
I havent been disappointed in my asus a8v deluxe mobo. The only thing i wish is that i would have gotten a pci-e board. And if you do home recording and need a $100+ "asio capable" audio card or any sound card for that matter. The mobo automatically disables the intigrated sound options and you can not switch between the two. You just have to take the card out to use intigrated sound.
My ram is Mushkin DDR 400 dual channel blue. I love the stuff.
And i would look into getting a nvidia 6800 GS for the value or you can go crazy and get a 6800 ultra or 7800. I know about nvidia cards more than ati cards so that is what i stick with.
Hope this helps
