I know you guys will like this. Originally my dad didnt want cable or a dog, both he was very firm about. So one of my brothers made the comment that when he's dead we'd have cable installed and have a dog. Well about 5 years ago he (medaphoricly) died, Macbeth came home and about a year or two before that we had cable installed.
I will say that before comcast we did have Americast, then we turned that off. I got cable bad stricly becuase of internet. Its so I had no excuse not to have info for research papers or homework.

I am a geek.
We just got an upgraded DVR (digital video recording) dish system last month.
Good things: Can record a LOT of shows and store on a HDD
Has a rewind function so you can see that death blow a second time.
Comes with two room setup free.
Awesome menu that will let you move through all the shows to see what's gonna be on, whats on, etc. all the way into next week.
Has two channels with MacGyver on!
Bad things:
Have to pay extra $5 a month to get local channels.
Not a very great channel selection (but as long as it has Discovery who cares!)
System will usually not work if it is raining outside.
The two room setup is just another remote and a cable that goes to the other room. The remote has to reach the main box, somce there is only one box total. So the remote has trouble sometimes. (It must be one heck of a powerful remote to reach ~20 feet to the livingroom)
The dish is ugly.
Awful DISH network commercials.
I have never tried digital cable before or I would do a comparison.

Maximum PC had a whole article about making a media PC that you could use a a TiVo Clone. Had three video cards, one being HDTV. The only thing I would have changed for their setup was to use MythTV rather then Windows Media Edition.
Of go to Systm.org they have one of their episodes about making a Myth-box and tell you everything you need to know.
So forget TiVo, go make your own DVR!

i had dish at my old house. they have the worst service EVER. even on a clear day, we lost the signal. When it rained, there was no way you could get anything, even with a light rain. Now we have directv in 4 rooms (one is a directv tivo, one a hughs tivo, one is a hughs HD tivo, and one is a hughs regular box) and we always get a signal. (we've had it for 4 years, and before it we had cable from time warner (which had like 50 channels))
Shhh! I'm not officially back yet.

I have basic cable and it rocks. BUT.......... I will tell you a secret were not paying for it! However were not stealing it either! How is this possible you may ask, well we used to have sub-basic which realy sucked bad(mostly because it stopped a few channels before Discovery and History), but then we got Comcast internet and they had to disable the hardware blocker at the pole which stops everything above Ch. 22 to give sub basic in order to get the internet to work. And Its been to years+ and they never put the blocker back even after we called the twice about the "problem" so we get basic cable for the sub-basic price! I do not know if this is a common problem but it sure is sweet since my parents always thought basic was over priced.

Ok, it's about time I went off for a minute...
I love the Dish network setup we have. My one and only complaint is that it only goes one one TV. Well, I suppose it would be nice if I could use the TV tuner instead, but that probably wouldn't be easy to do anyway.
Now, for those that hate those "my tv sucks" commercials, you are crazy! I find them absolutely hyserical! The casual "oh yeah, it sucks... your's doesn't?" Is really funny.
Next common "issue": loss of signal during rain. Yes, our dish does that as well. However, it only does it when it's really rainy, not just cloudy or sprinkly. If your dish is going out that easy, you probably don't have it positioned correctly. There is a menu somewhere in your receiver that tells you your signal strength. Get it to 80% or higher on a fairly clear day, and it should be fine. Having trouble doing that? Get a walkie talkie and have someone else tell you what it's at. Just remember that it's pretty sensitive when you do adjust it.
For those with parents that are afraid of porn and the like, Dish does have decent parental controls. it's easy enough to block channels, ratings, etc. You can also temporarily use a password if you do want to watch a show, too.
Well, that's about it.
