Funky Screen-Controller thingy

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

Has anyone tried to use one of those hip-gear screen/controller things as a screen? I am looking for a screen on-the-cheap for my SNESm. (currently experiencing technical difficulties.) thx in advance! 8)

Well, because it works with a PS2, ther should be some kind of composite, or else S-video or RGB input, instead of a digital in like the GBA, so it should work

I've got my PS2 Hip Gear controller and screen working working with my Sega Saturn and Dreamcast as well as PS2 and PS1. They are not Portablized, I just have them working with the controller and screen like normal.

For my Saturn I used this Saturn to PS2 controller adaptor from Liksang

and for my Dreamcast I used this DC to PS2 controller adaptor

At Target.com you can get a Hip Gear Screen for $39.99 in the US.

I m courious has how is the hip gear powered does it run off of the 5 volt in the controller ports? I'd really like to know, becaues if it doesnt require batteries I think I'll use it for my PSp.

Thanks for any help.

hmmm... it might run off of the 5V from the video port, since not all controller ports output 5V. It might also run off of a few AAs.

I think it runs off the port.

I was looking at the Screenpad the other day for my own project, and much to my dismay its plug says that it needs twelve volts(it uses its own ac adaptor)! Is there still some way to make it viable for a PSp without using a whole crapload of batteries, or is it out of the question?

It might use a 7805, so then it'd be viable, but then again, it might not.

I'm sorry, I don't quite understand how it using a 7805 would be helpful. If it does use one, then wouldn't that make it even more of a problem? Sorry, I just read some stuff on the 7805 and I'm fairly new to the whole electricity scene(but I'm learning.)

7805 is a 5V voltage regulator. The minimum voltage for a 7805 is 7.2V, but it can use 12V aswell. Because of this, even if the input is 12V, the electronics are receiving a regulated 5V.
Now, this is only true if the hip screen pads use a 7805 or other 5V regulator.

Ya, I just thought of that as I was reading about how it works in the Atari. Thanks for clearing that up.

I'll probably buy one in a few days and relay what I find out. If nothing else I geta cool pad out of it, right?

Well, i got my screenpad and took apart the screen. It consists of an LCD, a board for the LCD, a board for the dials, and a couple of speakers. I couldn't get it all the way out because there's a capacitor blocking one of the screws(i'll try to carefully bend it out of the way tomorrow), however, my initial measurements put the LCD at about 5-6mm, the main board at about 5-6mm with it's thickest compnent, and i'm not quite sure about the board with the volume/contrast/brightness/etc. When i looked at where the power switch was i'm pretty sure i saw a 7805(it was concealed on the other side of the board.) Hopefully i can get ahold of my brother's digi cam tomorrow when i open it up again and post up some pictures.

Those dimentions sound pretty nice. It's around the same as a ps1 lcd, so it'd be great for any portable project.
