If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

I'm not sure how many mcd my LEDs output, but they were rated at 3.6v@100ma, so they'd definitely be much brighter than your 20ma ones, segasonicfan
....how many ma do your leds consume, gannon? I think I used the ultrabright ones, too
Without games my life would have no meaning.
Well, I guess it would, but it would be a lot less fun!!!!!!!

we've already addressed that in this post...the short out fuse mod only works to raise the brightness on composite input, not RGB. It also destroys the contrast. I'll try the mod with 3 or 4 5000 mcd LEDs and see the results =)

To make the lighting more even, I believe you can sand off a bit of the LED cover, and that helps distribute the light better. If that doesn't work, you can place a small lens over the LED to spread the light.

in bens book it says that you can bypass something on the board to make the mod brighter. i think you bypass CV23

He's said twice that bypassing that only works for composite. He's using RGB.

I believe it is there to help the contrast on the composite line, but lowers the voltage at the same time, therefore the picture gets darker.

A thin sheet of plexi glass and a mirror under the lcd glass should really help with dissipating the light. Here's a picture...
But with all that stuff under the lcd it will probably crack!

This picture was actually for my ti-84 plus, I thought it looked cool.
Use white LEDs for a PSOne, though, no doubt!

Try running the Red Green and Blue lines through 200uF capacitors. IIRC, that should boost the brightness.
