Okay so I've stumbled on whats called a Universal inverter.
http://www.virtual-village.com.au/unive ... ium=shcomp" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Will that work with normal monitors? I'd be a hell of a lot more willing to use one of these than a big power inverter in a monitor for a portable or similar mod.

This is just the inverter for the backlight in a monitor. Not sure what you think it is or why you think it is better than the inverter specifically made for a monitor??

Re: Universal Intverter?
hailrazer's right. If it comes with one. Use That. But if the spec of the original one is exactly the same as the universal one, Well Then, You Might Be Able To Use It.
EDIT: Or Really Similar.

Because Its Common Sense. If you Converting Something with batteries to a wall adapter.
You Dont Put 9v In Some thing that wants 6v, You'll Fri It.
Nor Do You Put 3v In Some thing that wants 6v, Thats Not Enough.

In most electronics you can put in more or less volts than it is rated for.
For instance, the 12v screens I use. You can use as little as 4.5v or as much as 15v.

Re: Universal Intverter?
That is absolutely right. The reasoning is that most electronics will have a regulator inside to bring down the voltage from the input that is higher than it needs to the voltage that it requires.
The new generic power cords that people sell on ebay for the NES, for example, mostly output at 12V DC. The one that originally came with it outputs 9V AC. Inside the NES, there's a 7805 that the current immediately goes through, bringing the voltage down to the five volts that it uses.

@hailrazer
Depending if It Has A Power Regulator.
You Could Over Power The Buffer. Or Cut the Necessary Amount It Needs.
12 volt fans can run on 4 volts. But It Doesnt Function Like It Should.
Depending on The Electronic. HailRazer.

Re: Universal Intverter?
Even without a regulator all electronics have a measure of tolerance. Usually at least 10% but most are 20%.gamax92 wrote:@hailrazer

So at 10v most electronics will accept as low as 8v and s high as 12v. Most I said, not all.
And this is not a "rooting for" contest. If you're right, you're right. If you're wrong, you're wrong. It's that simple.

And hailrazer is almost always right.hailrazer wrote:If you're right, you're right. If you're wrong, you're wrong. It's that simple.
Also, gamax, you completely derailed the thread. The OP had a relevant question, maybe this inverter is smaller than the one for an LCD he has, which would be useful in a portable.
And to answer the OP's question, it should work for a regular monitor. Most monitors have a fairly standard fluorescent backlight. You could always give it a shot, if you blow up the backlight tube by accident you can usually get a replacement.

I wasn't rooting for anybody. I was saying that what hailrazer said was correct, and was explaining it for you.gamax92 wrote:@hailrazer

You said he is right. That could mean I was Right or HailRazer was Right. I Didn'n know at the time.
EDIT: Try Putting 9000v on a nes. that 7808 only can handle upto 36v fried.
EDIT: Try Powering a Nes with 1v

LOL. Fun stuff.
Thanks. The reason I was wondering was for a poertable. I figured I won't have any issues i was just wanting to get some feedbackjdmlight wrote: The OP had a relevant question, maybe this inverter is smaller than the one for an LCD he has, which would be useful in a portable.
