Can I salvage this PSOne Screen?

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

Can I salvage this PSOne Screen?

Post by Surfrock66 » Tue Sep 09, 2008 5:01 pm

I started an N64 portable 2 years ago, when I had a much less steady hand and not a lot of space. I ended up messing up the screen (a PSOne screen) and quitting the project. Now it's time to revisit it.

I had knocked a capacitor off a part of the board, which messed up the screen's ability to show color. Any image coming through the composite signal shows black and white. I know, however, the screen still displays color, seeing as the volume and brightness still show up green.

Is there any way to repair this damage, is there any spec of the capacitor I've knocked off to try some crazy ass repair? I know I could try to go RGB, but I have the N64 from 1997 with the AVDC chip with no RGB out. Here's some images of the damage below:

Wait, are you talking about the third one over in the second picture? If so, you're in luck! Simply put a blob of solder in it's place. This makes the screen much brighter, but this is great if you're doing the LED mod.

That sounds familiar, I think that's probably why I knocked the cap off to begin with as I did the LED mod.

Still no workie. Looking at my previous and shameful work, it looks like I messed up the caps next to it as well. Could there be a solution out of this new evidence? It looks like I knocked them off and reconnected them.

Um, you could try taking those off and putting solder in their place, but I don't know what the effects will be! It may mess up the picture, so I don't know if you should try it or not. :/

since a cap is technically an open circuit, I would have thought to remove it completely over shorting it. Any more ideas before I recklessly knock stuff off my board?

Nope, sorry. Never dealt with the B&W screen problem before. Although I think that happened to some else once, I'll do some searching.

Edit: Found that the person that was trying to get the screen to work was using RGB in, so yeah...

From what i can see, it just looks like you knocked a cap of one of the chroma lines. Just add a 0.1uf ceramic capacitor (104) in its place. See what happens.

are the chroma lines the ones next to the one I removed? .1uF is exactly the kind of info I was looking for.

Yeah i think so but i'm not 100% sure. As NTSC screens are slightly different to the PAL one we have here in the UK. Most off these lines near your missing cap are luma and chroma with filter caps ect. The AN2526NFH needs these caps for its chroma decoder to work properly. That should explain why theres no colour being displayed on your screen.

That did it! Thanks so much, I must have damaged the cap immediately to the right. It looked ok, but once I replaced it it immediately worked. Thanks so much!
