Audiovox VBP2000

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

I got one of these off of eBay for $10 (+~15 shipping), and the screen is really nice. The only things I don't like about it is the controller card is a bit clunky (I've managed to reduce the size significantly by desoldering and moving capacitors around), and the fact that it needs 12v. Other than that, the thing is pretty sweet (pictures to come when I get some freakin' batteries for my digital camera).

I'm all excited because it's going to be the screen for my first portable. Now if only I could decide on a console...

EDIT: The unit itself:

Note: these were taken before the cam ran out of batteries, so they don't show the moved capacitors. As you can see, the controller board on this thing is fairly thick, so it's going to take a fair amount of work to flatten it.

Are you sure it needs 12V? The hip gear screen needs 12V as well, but can run fine as low as 6V.

Yeah, I tried running it on other voltages. The sound dies out at about 9v, and the screen is to dark to see at anything less than 8v (though that's just the backlight, so that could be remedied).

Um, is it just me, or does everything else look like amplifcation stuff? You may not need all the stuff on the beige board.

I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case. I've been chasing the traces around to try and determine if there is anything on that board I need to keep.

It does appear that I need the beige board after all.

Wanna hear something funny though?

It's the same lcd panel that's on the PSone screen! (Toshiba TFD50W32-B2)
