While far from being 'handheld', mine is still the most mobile xbox I've seen. (despite actually being much less mobile than the original)
The xbox-mobile (or home theatre-mobile, I haven't decided) features a sturdy rolling cart, ghetto projector, cheap surround system and a modified xbox. It allows the system to be moved to various rooms depending on the needs of the day.
If I need it more portable I suppose I could always run it off a car battery for a couple minutes at a time... Add a wheelbarrow and it becomes the xbox-mobile 'offroad' edition. or I could always duct tape it all to the hood of a small car... (but then I'd get too many complaints from the other passengers on the plane)

it's a CTX easypro 550. I got it at goodwill for $20. (they must have thought it was a slide projector) But it's probably the same thing as that maverick you mentioned, as it does have that issue, especially with the higher resolution inputs, and in high contrast moments. the biggest problem with it is actually dust. I have to clean it every couple months. and for some reason, they made that unnecessarily difficult to do...
the good side of it is that it takes standard 400w lightbulbs. (commonly found in the dentist's office or in DJ lighting). They're only $6.50 each...
there are nicer low-end projectors out there (virtually all of them), but their bulb expenses can be a nightmare.

Man, when I start up my projector it has a blue screen with a red rectangle in the middle where it says CTX, so it basically the same thing. Oh, and another issue with it... it gets hot.. it gets hot fast, it practically heats up my whole room in like 10 mins.
And no way it could cost $495, I got mine from my dads work, they were throwing it away and my dad asked for it. I don't blame them for throwing it away, its like a fire hazard..... but it sure is fun.

ebay value on it is $250-$350. I considered selling it and getting one of thoese $250 'game projectors' once. But thinking about it, those are probably far worse for refresh rate.
it actually doesn't produce much more heat than most of the other units--but it does seem to have a much bigger fan to blow it around. At work I covered the lens of a modern epson with a CD case (because they didn't put a 'blank screen' button on it) and it melted the CD case in short order.
projectors are the way to go, though. I'll never be happy with a TV again--even a big screen. Before I got it I was a small-screen-snob. About 30 minutes after I found that projector, I realized I was a totally different person.
