(ZCP) slimmed heatsink to save space?

Hay guys,
i have a question about the heatsink chunk of the gc, it's kinda big and might take up space, so can it be slimed down a bit to save space?

i checked zenlog's post and his cooling fan, but it's out of stock, where else can i find this specific cooling fan?
because it seems to be the best solution.

i saw on my gc that the stock fan was placed facing the heatsink with an air vent left and at the end of the heatsink the other air vent, so when i make my design for the gcp, i have to make a air vent hole for the fan in and out.

but does the fan stock if i use it have to be facing up?

and can i extend it's cable to the small power board?

You can easily extend the fan's wire... just cut it and solder longer wires between the old connections. I'm pretty sure you could find that heatsink on ebay. If you get one, it has a side-blowing fan inside, so you wouldn't need the old stock fan anymore. To power it, you could get the right voltage from the regulator board attachment pins. I don't think you would power it off of 12 volts.

Another popular solution is to trim the original heatsink and glue a stock fan or other fan directly onto the slimmed heatsink.

Okay Dad had a great way to remove the fins for the heatsink.

First thing you do is grind/cut the fins at the point were the fan ends.

Then you "score" a fin at the base with a knife

Next use a screwdriver to bend the fin

Then score the other side



Bend back and forth to remove



Here's the result




Oh and I wired the GC side disc drive...

so when you mean solder the fan's ends, to two longer wires going into the fan's connector on the powerboard chip,
black is the positive
gray is the negative?

and the volts for the heatsink? 12v?
what kind of glue? UHU runny glue or super glue or hotglue?

i've made a reference about this method from Hackmodford's gcp log and your really helpful info in my work log
