PS2 Slim plus fan

Post by jcl3042 » Thu Feb 03, 2011 8:47 am

Hi everyone this is my first post. My PS2 slim seems to be over heating. I was hoping to add a small fan on the side to push the hot air out. Has anyone figured out how to do this without using external power. I realize the fan will have to be mounted outside of the case. That's okay with me. any ideas?

Hey there and welcome!

There are a few ways you can do this. You can actually solder the positive and negative battery to the bottom of the dc jack on the ps2. Because the ps2 has a power cord that runs st 5amps you should be fine.

Is there a wiring diagram. I'm gonna pick up a 60mm fan for this project. I don't wanna fry anything.

I have a portable diagram but you can easily figure it out trust me. Just attach positive to positive and negative to negative. I have a ps2 wire diagram in the ps2/Xbox/game cube thread so just ignore all of the extra stuff on it and look at the + and - on the ps2 motherboard. I hope this helps you!

Every time it overheats and shuts down, you are shortening the life of the Processor. From my memory, it was the Emotion Engine and the Graphics Synthesizer as Sony calls them...

The stock heatsink / fan is fine!!!

Just open the console up, and clean all the dirt / dust out and be sure that the fan is actually WORKING.

I thought the same thing but took it as worse case scenario. Reply here if this info helps :).

I did open it up and clean it out, and watched the fan to make sure it actually was spinning. But I still have the problem. What I see is that when I play more graphically intense games it shuts down faster. I can play PS1 games for hours with no problems at all. But if I put let's say mortal Kombat in there boom! no power.

Are there other reasons it would shut off that way? Like I said it doesn't do it with ps1 games

edit: Played LOTR: the two towers today shut off within a few minutes. Uplugged the av out cable and it's been running solid for about ten minutes now
could the av cable cause the shut down

Hmm, sounds like a faulty connection to me then.

Something is causing the PS2 to trigger its 'safety mechanism' and shut off power.

Try different AV cables and be sure that none of the pins appear bent or anything. Also remove memory card, controllers, attachments such as HDD etc...

If all still fails. Just buy a new one...

I also read somewhere that the powerpack could be the problem. But I checked it on a volt-meter and it was runnng 8.7 Volts. I know its suppose to be 8.5 but I figured 8.7 was probably okay. The other issue could be he power jack I'm gonna check the soldering today.

Took it apart last night to check the solder points. Had to pull the fan off (Just got a set of watch screwdrivers so I could do this). And the bottom of the fan was covered in dust. So I blew it off with the air and blew down the entire system and got all the dust off. The wife and I played LOTR: Return of the King on coop for about 3 hours today before it finally powered off. So maybe it's working more properly... But there must still be some sort of heat issue. Or something

Ah ok. So now, probably take off the heatsink and there should be like a rubber pad. Brown usually. Make sure, that it is making good contact with the heatsink. But apart from that, it sounds like the CPU has gone...

Best to just buy a new one...

....and the tears begin to flow. It hasn't cut off since that first time. so maybe it was a fluke? I dunno I'll check the heatsink out. I guess worst case scenario I get a new "used" one.

My wife just started playing kingdom hearts watching the clock.
