Battery question...

Post by 0uttake » Sat Jan 08, 2011 3:21 pm

I am using 4 of these... http://www.batteryspace.com/polymerli-i ... AID=314743

with this... http://www.batteryspace.com/pcbfor148vl ... AID=314743

and this... http://www.batteryspace.com/smartcharge ... AID=314743

Is it safe to run the Gamecube from the batteries whilst they are charging?

Thanks in advance.

MrAfterFx wrote:Yes but you will need a 3 way switch. One way for off, battery power and wall power. I cant find a diagram but I will gladly help you find one. If you need to know right away PM Hailrazer and he will help. He is the best with batteries and has helped me out so much, a very cool dude!
I have drawn a diagram with a 3 way switch which includes the Gamecube's power supply AND the charger.

pos1. power from dc adapter
pos2. off
pos3. power from batteries.

But with this diagram I would need 2 power jack ports (one for the charger and another for power), this would make for undesirable bulk when I'm travelling as I would need both adapters. So I want to be able to just have one port for the charger and be able to play whilst they are charging as well. So you think it is doable?

So this would work? I don't need the Gamecube DC adapter at all?

No you can't play and charge with the lithiums we need to use and the smart chargers we use. Not enough power. Now I have seen a 3amp lithium charger but I haven't used it so I don't know for sure if it would work properly.

Thanks hailrazer, I will look into it and see what I find.

But if you use http://www.batteryspace.com/CMBfor14.8V ... mited.aspx you can play and charge at the same time.

Well of course you can. But the system will pull more current than the charger provides. So the batteries wont charge. That's the problem. Its a charproblemerage problem not a PCB problem.

I'm thinking of getting the 3amp charger, it should have enough to run the gamecube and screen and maybe a little left over to charge very slowly. what do you think Hailrazer? worth trying?

Actually I think this board will work because is a CMB not a PCB. It will let you use any 16-18v wall wart. So play and charge may be possible.

Oh so you're saying it has an overcharge/undercharge protector AND a over and under voltage limiter for the batteries?
If so then that would work. I'm at work so I can't check the link and see.

Well I am no good with batteries so if you could check it out for me I would be greatly appreciative. It seems to have full protection. And if it means I won't need a pcb and can use any 16-18v dc adapter that would be amazing.

Much respect.

The board is capable of being charged by 16-18 DC adaptor and discharged at the same time.
And if you use a 3a adaptor it will charge much faster than the charger you were originaly going to use.

looks like it has the needed protections:

Discharging protection
Over-charge protection voltage for single cell: 4.25V/cell
Over-discharge protection voltage for single cell: 2.30V/cell
Over-current detection protection: 16.0A
Short circuit protection

and it has a fuel gauge too:

Included Press Fuel gauge switch to check the status of charge/discharge
