PS2 Disc Drive Problem.

Post by boxerorange » Tue Jul 07, 2009 4:38 am

Hello all...

My PS2 is fine playing games and all that snazzy stuff, but if I put a DVD in it...BAM "Disc Read Error". It used to work fine. Only thing I did was leave a DVD in it (playing) for about 12 hours. That shouldn't wreck it completely...

That's what I had figured. But any DVD I put in just gets an error!

If you've got a spare PS2 lying around, swap the disc reading modules and try again. If it still gives the error, it's a software issue. If it works, it's a hardware issue. Pray that it's a hardware issue, since replacement modules are like $8, whereas I have no idea what to do if it's software-related.

Then again, I don't see how it could possibly be a software issue anyway, so it's stupid of me to suggest that.

Try cleaning the lens (do NOT use something abrasive like paper towel) and retrying. Then, if that fails, try reading this guide on realigning/replacing it.
what is this i don't even

Turns out that my PS2 likes to read "darker" colored discs, commonly PS1 games (It plays GTA2, THPS3, and Half-Life fine) but not any of the "normal" colored DVDs such as Guitar Hero or just plain DVDs. Has this happened to other people before?

PS1 disks are CDs - PS2 disks and DVDs are DVDs. DVD media is much more dense, so this sort of thing is not uncommon. My brother's XBox (you know the one) has no problems with CDs but chokes on most games (hence, putting the games on the hard drive).

Ah. So is this fixable or what is the deal? Do I just need a new laser?
