Yeah, "no d-pad", although in practice, ever used it on the GameCube? Interesting article I thought, was mostly correct, apart from the d-pad and system name, and layout of the action buttons!

Star Cube would have been a nice name. Would make a nice name for a portable too! :D (I am sure someone will use it now....)!

The D-pad-less controller they're referring to is probably this one:

As for D-pad use in-game, I think it opened up your inventory and possibly also toggled the map in "Twilight Princess," and you could also use it for character control in "The Simpsons Hit and Run" and (I'm pretty sure) "Naruto: Clash of Ninja 2."

EDIT: 777th post! Yeah!

Interesting pic of what I presume was a prototype controller?? Any info around it?

I believe it was an earlier prototype, yes. The page I found the picture on (which is this one) didn't have much info on it, though it had two other prototype controllers pictured, too. However, from what I've gathered on the internet, the GameCube was, at one point, supposed to have motion-sensing controllers - this might have been what they would have looked like, making it similar in functionality to the PlayStation 3's SIXAXIS/Dualshock 3, though they could also have resembled the Wii remote. Supposedly, the designers for "Star Wars Rogue Squadron II" had one of the prototype controllers during development - and this was a GameCube launch title!
