PS2 Slim laptop

Post by ITman496 » Mon May 11, 2009 3:05 pm

Hey, I'm new here, and I am deciding to embark on a project that no one else has seamed to have tried yet. (And I am hoping that the reason is laziness and not because it is impossible XD)
What I want to do is take a PS2 slim, and take the mainboard out, with the CD drive and all, and place it in a case, with a 15.4 inch desktop LCD as the screen. I can easily fit the control board for the LCD, plus a analog to VGA converter, plus the power supply, and other needed components next to the PS2's mainboard in the case. I will draw up some designs later, but one question, how big is the slim's board? Thickness wise, I know the footprint, but I need the thickness. Also, I will be powering it with some spare Lipo batteries from my RC cars, (3-4 5000 mAH batteries)

The thing is, I really don't like the concept of a handheld ps2. The screen would be small, and the controls awkward. It would also be heavy. What I would like is a nice laptop I could set on my lap or on a table. I am fairly good with building things, (made numerous RC cars, build computers, can use a soldering iron fairly well) I can also make strait cuts and generally a good case for it.
Any suggestions? As soon as I figure out the dimensions of the main board, I will draft up a design in sketchup or something...

Also, gonna put some cool LED's in it XD

EDIT:
I was also thinking of using these components:
15.4 inch monitor with speakers:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Nova-LCM-1540W-15-4 ... .m20.l1116" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Converter:
http://cgi.ebay.com/HDTV-Component-Vide ... 1|294%3A50" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Batteries: (Already own 12)
http://www.ehobbies.com/asc703.html?utm ... gn=froogle" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The rest will be made or bought later... am I missing something? I will need to make a power supply to power the monitor and PS2, but I already know that, what else would I need?

According to the specs, that monitor is 7" thick. That doesn't seem quite right, but you still might want to check it out before you purchase. Since the PStwo is already tiny, why not go with a 9"/10" display instead, netbook style?

I think that is because the stand is that long... I used to own one of these, and it was pretty thin, and I plan to remove the circuitry from the back and putting it in the main body, making the only part on the hinge the monitor/back light.

I don't want a 9/10" screen because it wouldn't give me enough space in the main body to put everything easily, plus batteries...

Is everything else okay? I plan to integrate two wireless controllers and just carry them around with me.

Are you going to put in a keyboard?
If no, you can always go the tablet route, and omit the hinge entirely. You would want some sort of screen cover, but that's nothing a neoprene laptop case can't handle. Though I suppose that would make a slot drive preferable, the lid on the back would be kind of awkward.

Thoughts?

I'm still going to sick with a laptop design, as it will allow me to have a stable way to sit it on my lap on the bus, or on a table without a stand...

I may put in a keyboard, just to fill in the empty space, but I may not, as this is my first project and I don't want to over complicate it.

Any other suggestions?

Also, I still don't know how deep the PS2's main board is...

Can't help you, sorry.

Yeah, that sounds about right, thinking that the PS2 is only 1.1" thick... lol, maybe I should make it where I can pop the PS2 in and out, like make a laptop battery like slot for the ps2 XD

Why would you want that? Just add AV-out to the back, and have the screen turn off when it's closed. Also, integrate the mains into the charger so that you can charge the batteries and play at the same time without needing a high-amperage charger. :o

the pstwo runs at 8.5 v0lts and the screen runs at 12, so you will need regulators and stuff. and i wouldnt recommend using a widescreen screen. most pstwo games are 4:3.

cant wait, good luck!!

yeah, each battery is 8 volts, 6 when dead... so I would most likely hook them so 2+2, which will give me 16 volts max, 12 minimum, at 10000 mAh... which I imagine would allow me to play for a while XD

Yeah, gonna integrate the PS2 and do what you said...

And, yeah, I have a good idea with the charger...

Also, my goal is to make the main body of the laptop around 1", and the screen 1/2", so its laptop sized... gonna put the PS2 in blue like the old fat ps2 on the lid of the laptop XD

Well, I have this charge controller that can be programmed to charge multiple batteries simultaneously, and it is only 2" by 1" by 1/2", and has 12 volt in on one side, and 4 charge leads for lipo's

All I would need was to have a small 12 volt power supply to charge/use it

and it comes with a lcd readout!

No, I already own it, and have owned it for about a year now, don't remember where I got it... =(

But what should I make the case out of, and should I add an additional fan, and make my own cooling system, because of the additional head of the monitor/psu/video conveters?

You shouldn't have much extra heat, I wouldn't worry about it. Switching regulators don't generate really any heat, so a PSU wouldn't add anything.
