Xbox 360 Lappy in the works sortof

Post by caseyr7 » Thu May 29, 2008 12:35 am

I have decided to make an xbox 360 portable using a metal briefcase and a 15" lcd i got for cheap. i was wondering what kind of board i should use that is light durable and thin that i could screw the screen and speakers into, and use it as a faceplate for the top of the briefcase. and i have decided to not do any moddings to the 360 unit itself. what i am thinking is mod the case and put 3 or 4 usb fans around the fans that are at the back of the unit. or 2 fans at the back and 1 on either side of the case. and i have one more big question... What should i do to get the power cables to all be one cable that plugs in the wall, would i just take the power cable and cut it open and solder the speaker, monitor and 360 cables together? Any thoughts and help would be greatly appreciated

ps and i know i am a newb here so dont flame me saying newb alert, i have been reading a lot on this site and have decided to register that is the only reason i have no feedback

For you, I'd use wood (plywood maybe) for the screen/speaker support. Easy to cut, very available, cheap, paintable, screwable, varying thicknesses, and easy to glue.

For the power, there are two options. First, you could put all the power supplies inside the briefcase, and have either a jack or an extension cord running to the outside. Wire everything in parallel and you're set. The other option would be to combine the power supplies externally, use some funky plug, wire it up.... but that sounds like too much trouble.

If you don't want to do any modification to the console, maybe you could just get an attachable screen like

http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-9-2-TFT- ... B000BX57PE

or

http://kotaku.com/gaming/hardware/porta ... 252900.php

But, If you want to make your own, you could get a sheet of acrylic (plastic) at home depot or lowes. And sure, you could combine all the power cables into one somehow...

wow, I'm jealous. My friends and I had been planning on doing this with a NES, but we couldn't find a screen of a reasonable size at a reasonable price.

Seems somewhat of a copy of my dreamcast idea. :s (Like, not taking the console out of its shell. And putting it inside the laptop case.)

Cool though.

Plywood need not be thick nor heavy. I think you could use "hardboard" which is similar to what clipboards are made from. I'd say run down to your local hardware store and see what they have in stock. My local Home Depot has a section of specialty woods (hardboard, pegboard, melamine, etc) in convenient sizes. Saves you from buying a 4'x8' sheet when you only need 2'x2'!

well i have gotten the cable issues worked out and have put all the power cables into one and have tested to make sure that everything powers up at the same time. i have received the briefcase. everything seems to be going according to plan. i will have pictures up asap and the reason i didnt want just a screen was i wanted something to be able to tote it around in as well as keep everything safe. and make it nearly inconspicuous
