Handheld Gamecube attempt

Post by Gamelver » Sun Apr 11, 2004 12:55 am

Notice how I said handheld not portable because technically the Gamecube can already be portable with the battery and the screen.

Anyways I'm going to buy a 50 dollar gamecube from a friend and I'm gonna rip that sucker apart  . I'm planning on using a Gamecube screen because, obviously, the screen is made for the Gamecube.

Feel free to give me any tips or suggestions.

The main thing I'd be worried about would be if you're going to remove the fan. I'm not sure how much ha\eat the gc produces normally.
I'll probably do that mod if I think I can do it without messing it up.
As for the heat dissipation I might add a new fan or more heatsinks.
As soon as I open up the Gamecube and start experimenting I'll see what works best.

Alright my Gamecube screen just same in the mail today. Later, if I can, I'll try to get the Gamecube and open it up.

One question before I set out for the Gamecube:
Does anyone know the capacity rating on the Gamecube battery? That battery says it lasts for about two hours and if I can match it then I could have two hours too.

the gamecube battery usually lasts for about 1.5 hours with the Intec Gamecube Screen

Just wanted to say that I plan on making the A/V input of the Gamecube screen a part of the GCp and I also want to ask if anyone has ever seen or heard of making a DVD player portable on their own because it would be cool to be able to watch movies on the GCp.

Ok the Gamecube has been obtained!!!!!! :D
I have carefully(well maybe not so carefully  ) opened it up and it is even smaller than the pictures I have seen of it :D I'll probably use two 7.2 3000mAH RC car batteries like gannon on his PS2p and I'll knock it down to 12 volts. As for the controller I still have to find something that can turn those nintendo screws!!!!Or I could just buy one from Nintendo.

Oh yeah I measured the amperage needed for the Gamecube and it looks like it needs about 1800 mA so those batteries should be good.
Does anyone know of some kind of extender for ribbon cables because that would be really useful for this project?

hmm.. I don't know where this should go, but since your talking about batteries, I'll put it here.
A person emailed me recently commenting on my work with a ps2p, and suggested that I might want to use Lithium polymer batteries. I've checked them out, and they are a little more expensive than the batteries I'm using at the moment, but they are incredibly small and light. I'm not sure how long there life is though.
Here is a site that lists sells them.

Those batteries do look like they'd be great for a portable. You're right though, they are expensive and you have to buy a specific charger for the that's around 50 dollars :( . I really need a shop vac though for the vacuum form table so right now I'll probably stick with some RC car batteries but hopefully I can give them a try later.

hmmm......earlier I went to Radioshack to check out those batteries and I thought, wow these are big. So then I noticed a 9.6 volt battery and realized that 9.6 + 2.4(two rechargable Ni-mh batteries) equals 12 :D
I think I'll go with that because then I won't have to knock the 14.4 volts into 12 and I can save space(which I need because the disc reader is a bit larger than I would have liked :( )

Why not just go with 10 NiMH AAs? You'll probably save money over the $35+ that Radio Shack wants for the RC battery, and you can use them for other things. Search Ebay for 'nimh aa'. (Or search for 'nimh 12v'...there are some 12v packs around.)

hmmmmm never thought of Ebay. Yeah I originally wanted to use 10 rechargables but I couldn't get good ones cheap. I don't know why I didn't think of Ebay before but thanks I'll go check 'em out.

Ok I got the GC to run off of 12 Nimh 2300 mAH AAs so now I got build the case and stuff it all in there. Maybe if I get some more money I'll use those Li-poly batteries but for right now I'll just use 12 AAs.
