wii sensor bar wireless version! (concept)

Post by *o* » Wed Nov 22, 2006 9:41 pm

OK!

If you havent seen the sensor bar being replaced by a couple of remotes then you can watch it here!

Now to my idea:

1) get a 555 and set it to flash fast ( 5-100hz [yet to be determined])

2) attach two IR leds to that

3) Attach two AAA batteries to the circuit

4) place the led's about 20cm apart and attach it subtly to the top of your TV!

I assume this will work but i will see in two weeks when i get my wii!

If you get a camera phone & look at the infrared emissions, you'll see that there's actually 5 LED's on each side...

Have you noticed that all your posts end in an ellipsis...

Anyway, that sounds like a cool idea. I don't really see the need for it, as I barely notice my Wii sensor bar above my TV. However, the cabinet on my TV is wood-grain, so that may have something to do with that. It sounds like your idea would work, but just be sure to put the LED's at enough brightness and the correct distance apart from each other.

maybe it would work to just replace the sensor cord (it's just a power chord, it doesn't transmit data...unless it makes the IR leds blink or something) with batteries

Zing!

Anyways, atari2600a is right. There are not only 2 IR LEDs inside the sensor bar, more so 10.

EDIT: daguuy is right too. :P

What if I like the way the sensor bar looks? Can't I just cut the wire and hook up batteries? I don't really want to snip my Wii yet though...

If you're looking at this post and it was made before 2008, just ignore it.

Well yeah it would seem like it'd be possible, but I also thought of this:

Increase the Hz rate of the flashing LED's: Would that give the wii better solid control over the screen when pointing?

I mean, in the video the guy used remotes which, flash pretty slowly. And In the video, from what I could tell, the LED's in the sensor bar only blinked every once in a while, A lot slower. So mabye there is a rate that would give better reception.

And one last pointer:
People on the internet thought the sensor bar accepted data from the controller and whatnot, but on the nintendo wii website it clearly says that the wii's motion is controlled by accelerometers, not IR LED's.
(Sentence complete)

EDIT:
The only real reason I'd make one of these is if I lost the sensor bar. I really don't mind having the cord.

is there need for a cordless thingy bar? why the heck didn't they just supply one if it's that easy?
how long is the cord, and how well does the wii work with projector setups?

I remember nintendo saying that they wanted wii to work with all setups (projectors specifically), but if there's a cord, they didn't seem to want it badly enough, and haven't even left wii as a good gaming option. (unless they plan to release one later and squeeze $30 more out of us for their "bargain" system)

You don't have to the wiimote triangulates it all the sensor bar is doing is shining out ir leds so if you don't want to snip it up that's fine.

I've thought about doing that to. You see, my tv is about 5m away from my console setup so the supplied cable wouldn't be long enough. I do think Nintendo will release a first party wireless sensor bar in the future.

The main issue i think i will have with the sensor bar is that i have a 2.5m projected TV and my hi fi stand is atleast 2m away and thats where i plan to put my wii...so i may HAVE TOO make one of these...

I don't have a Wii and haven't seen the IR leds, but I'm guessing it blinks the LEDs very quickly so they aren't overdriven by the source voltage.

Same concept as your TV remote - the IR led needs to be very bright. The LED is being overvolted, but only for a very brief time. So no harm is done.
