Im ready to make a PS1P!
Moderator:Moderators
ok, well im 13 but i've been dealin with electronics for ages and i was surfin the web and found this site. I decided i wanted to make a PS1P. I have all the basic knowledge: grounding, soldering, and programming... that sorta stuff) So can anyone tell me the basic components to a PS1P?
Heres my list so far: A rc car battery, a psone...duh.., a ps1 lcd screen, and multiple controllers. As for the rc car battery, i have a 9.6 volt 1300 mA, is that enough to power lcd and ps1, or too much and blow up and fry the ps1? i've heard 7.2 volts can power the lcd and ps1, is this true? but i would like to use my 9.6, also will i need a regulator?

thanx. i'll go to radioshack over the weekend or something. And the case is going to be the psone, and the lcd will be able to flip down over it with my design, similer to atkafighter's ps1p. thanx again for ur help.

Well you're off to a good start, and the list of things you have looks OK. However that battery will both fry the PSone/screen combo, and it won't last long.
I suggest the 3000mah 7.2v Ni-MH battery from RadioShack (catalog #23-330) because it has the correct voltage for the PSone (so you won't need a regulator circuit) and it has more Milliamp/hours than your current battery (more milliamps=more battery life)
When you go to pick out a battery there are 2 types to avoid:
-Ni-Cad (They lost power quickly and have a "memory effect", so they wear out faster)
-Lead-Acid (Like car batteries. They have massive amounts of power, but are heavy!)
But yes, you would need a power regulator on that battery to make it work properly. (check my psonep thread, there's a way to make a 7805 from Radio Shack output 7.5v) But I highly suggest you get a new battery, because un-modded you'll only get about 45 minutes of play time out of it. (The PSone screen draws about 1000ma, the systemitself pulls about 700 if I remember right)
Good luck, and don't be afraid to ask questions. (But search first )

Another thing - if you get a 3000 mah bettery as bic suggested, you'll probably need a better charger as well - I'd guess yours is a 15 minute timed charger. I'd recommend getting a MRC Super Brain 959 - you can mod it to work great (it charges anything!). Go to towerhobbies.com if you want to buy it.

Hey there Harshboy,
Its good to hear that you want to build a PSoneP. It was my first project as well. I have an ok write up on my site (not sure if you have seen it). It tells you how to do it exactly as I did. And your 7.2v battery will not fry the system its perfect actually, but your 9.6 volt 1300mah battery would.
You'll find that the wiring isn't very difficult on this project, but fitting everything in the case, and making all the controls work is.
It would also be a good idea to pick up Ben's book. It is an invaluable resource for all things portable.
Good luck,
atkafighter

actually i was going to make a n64p...shame on me!......but then i did see ur site, its wut inspired me to make a ps1p. Yeah, once i get some more cash im gonna go buy the book, and buy all the other things i need. I just asked if the 7.2 volt would fry the screen cause the guy said the ps1 screen dont got a regulator, but ok...thats wut i thought, but just thought i'd be safe. im hoping my ps1p will turn out like urs, and since im on a low income.....about $0.00 a week....i better not screw up..........im probally gonna sell my DS and my ps2 so that should get me enough $. BTW....um when u have the battery u wire red to inner and black to outer, right? I'm pretty sure thats right tho, but just to be safe i thought i'd ask.
