Not sure how to turn on the n64 with battery

Okay, I've soldered the positive wire onto the 12v spot on the motherboard and put it through the stepdown regulator and soldered it to the 3.3v spot and I've bypassed the power switch port; shouldn't making contact with the battery make the LED on the console turn on? Again, I'm just following a guide and I'm new to this so sorry if this is an elementary question.
