replacing the internal battery

Post by Artyom » Thu Apr 28, 2011 9:21 am

Hello,

Currently I'm looking into replacing the dead 3v coin cell in my dreamcast with something that has a bit more juice. The battery I'm hoping to use is a 3.6V 1200 mAh 1/2AA Keeper cell Li/SOCI2. The extra 0.6v shouldn't matter right? if so is there anything I need to wire up so I don't blow something?

-Thanks,
Artyom

Why wouldn't you just use two AA lithium batteries?
This kind:

That way you're still giving it 3v. And two AA's would last basically forever if it originally had a coin-sized battery.

Fight MS Paint abominations! If you don't have a camera, go here, and pick something 3 megapixels or higher.

Won't the Dreamcast attempt to trickle-charge the CMOS battery, which as I remember tends to end badly when you've substituted alkaline AA batteries?

Actually, I seem to remember there being some form of mod involving a diode, so that it will draw from the AA batteries but can't attempt to charge it, but I don't remember the specifics at this moment.

You can use two rechargeable AA or AAA batteries and it works fine. If you use lithium it will eventually leak acid everywhere and you don't want that :) I bought a rechargeable 2032 coin cell off of ebay to replace mine but as long as it is rechargeable and around 3v it doesn't matter.

Did the same a while ago and sent a guide to mmmonkey to put on his site. Note the charge voltage anything above 3v wouldn't be the key. With this battery you need to follow the original instructions ie: turn it on every 1.5-2 weeks to keep the charge up.

Those pictures are perfect! Thats one good camera.

Ahem, uh. *cough* back on topic.

Why hasn't someone made the CMOS / BIOS batteries run off of a 3 volt rechargeable lithium ion battery? When the battery dies, it charges itself from a power source using a circuit (power from the console / mainboard)...
