help on starting out, where to begin!

Post by cplexroro » Mon Nov 15, 2010 10:51 pm

hi! im brand new to the forums and need some help.
i've been researching it for a little while now and decided that in stead of a present, i just asked my brother to help/make me a portable n64, he has basic soldering skills, so it shouldent be too terribly difficult, but im just very lost, i know all the things im going to need (for the most part) but once i dissasimble everything im not sure im going to know exactly what to do, so im asking if you more experienced forum-goers will guide me through this, so far this is my list of needed things, please tell me if theirs anything else i'm missing:
n64: http://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-N64-Cons ... 94&sr=1-20" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;[/size]

expansion pack: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000Y0 ... N4C5P4RJXF" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

http://www.amazon.com/Performance-Memor ... 41&sr=1-34" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

ps1 screen:
http://www.amazon.com/LCD-Screen-playst ... B00005QI2S" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

new soldering iron: (my current one is garbage)
http://www.amazon.com/Weller-WPS18MP-Pe ... B0013U9R1E" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

solder: http://www.amazon.com/American-Terminal ... 583&sr=1-1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

zn-45 polycase case:
http://www.polycase.com/item/zn-45.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

regulator-thingy:
http://focus.ti.com/docs/prod/folders/p ... 8080w.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

steal the batteries from this guy:
http://www.amazon.com/Polaroid-PDV-0700 ... B0000EI9UC" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

resistor:
http://www.microcenter.com/single_produ ... id=0349261" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

TBH, you'd be much better off getting batteries from a camcorder cell IMO.

*might want some tact swithces for the buttons/shoulder triggers.
*maybe a psone controller if you want an easier/different option for the triggers
*switches for power etc.
*Batteries:
Easiest option:
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Super-Rechargeab ... 27b43370d1
most reliable option:
buy cells/protection circuit/charger from batteryspace and build yourself

also would be good:

bondo/epoxy putty
sandpaper
dremel
hot glue

why do you think camcorder batteries would be preferable? the only reason i really chose those is because this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ubw8cReJ ... re=channel" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; recommended it, it has a battery life reader thingy, and it comes with a cord, i think he said it would get like 2 and a half hours life, would a camcorder be easier/ less expensive, if so what type should i get?

do you think i could possibly use gamecube triggers? ive always kinda liked those, as well as the gamecube z trigger/button, i know it's possible but would that just be a lot of work, or should i just use the triggers that come w/ the controller, also wold this work as a power switch?: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index ... PerPage=60" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; it looks pretty nice and it has an led, so thats a bonus, is their anything else ill need a switch for, i chose the ps1 screen, with comes with a volume/brightness rocker correct?
