I have seen the LOB64 in some threads, but I don't know how you would take all three wires and convert them into one pin. Another reason is that I wanted to make an N64p that would be able to be taken to someone's house, plugged in, and played multiplayer without large cables. Then again, this is my first mod, so I might just save that for Mark II and just focus on the more important aspects of the design.

It doesn't convert it into one pin. It just provides a place for you connect it. The cable contains 8 wires.
LOB64 would allow you A/V out, multiplayer on A/V out (via breakout box, like this), and even portable multiplayer if you ever get the need. Plus, an ethernet jack is small, compared to say a parallel port (though a 3.5mm jack is smaller).

Never mind. I forgot that LOB64 doesn't provide power to the controllers. Use a serial port if you want a breakout box.

But if you really want controller plugs in the portable, see the L64.

Ok, that makes a lot more sense, and I'll probably use that idea because in going back and seeing the L64 again, I realized how thick it is.

In non-hypothetical world, still trying to find a good N64 under 60 bucks.

I am still awaiting the package to arrive with the console. During testing (to make sure it still works). I will post pictures of my victim volunteer.

You were having trouble finding an N64 for <$60???

Also- don't do what hail did with a 9-pin sereal port. Do composite, L audio, R audio, GND, P1, P2, P3, P4, +3.3v (out), and +7.4v (in).

Yes, that is 10 pins. Make GND the shielding.

Have your box, in turn, have 4 controller ports, A/V out, and wall power input for playing on TV.
Cheers,

I was, but ebay sellers have some pretty high prices.
Anyway, I found one, and it should be at my house tomorrow.

I might have to make two serial ports, because I am planning to (eventually) make a slave system with only video and a controller in it (for on-the-go games of Smash Bros).

If you made a slave system, you could still just hook it up to the breakaway box serial port.

First of all, that would be a LOT of pins to connect

I suppose you're saying that I should connect the separate serial port to the breakaway box, but that would make it a lot more bulky and defeat the purpose of just having the slave and the original console connected. And that would still be a lot of pins.

Wait, maybe I could make some controller ports on the slave that connect via a larger serial port into the original. (Then again, that would make the whole setup a little more complicated, but worth a try)

Nevermind, I figured it out. I forgot that LOB64 wasn't just for extra controllers, it's for everything you'd want, from slave systems to 4P control ports to AV plugs. I'll have just one port, a slave with another port linked to P2, and a breakaway box with AV and controller ports.

I think I just answered my own question and posted the process on the Internet.

No I'm saying have one serial port, and connect the breakaway box or the slave unit to it, but not both at once.

The slave would be for on-the-go multiplayer, and the box would be for at home multiplayer.
