Average Total Pricing?

Post by pablojr » Sat Mar 13, 2010 12:47 pm

I wanted to make a portable n64 until i found that they average around 250$ to make. I could buy a net book or a used ps3 for 250$ is there anyway to bring the pricing down a lot?

Not really; $250 is even low for a quality portable. They take a lot of time to make, and parts can cost almost that much.

I think he meant for parts.
You can easily stay under $150 depending on what batteries you use and what tools you already have. Under $100 is doable if you get some good deals.

I read it again, and I think you're right.

If you have tools and an N64, a cheap one is doable. You can use cheap batteries (but nice lithium ones are better) and most any screen, but the PS1 screen is pretty much the best for the price. It also depends on the case that you use.

i actually did the math on this last night. the standard ZN-45 N64p with 4700 mA batteryspace batteries and protection circuit, a PSone screen, the console itself, and about 20$ extra for misc. parts and it would cost around 110$-130$ depending on if you fry anything and other factors

I spent $170 total, which includes soldering stuff, a hot glue gun, and bondo/epoxy.

It ends up costing way more in the long run. Especially the first one. Just keep track of how much you spend, I bet you will break $200 in unforeseen costs

So epoxy is free.
Sandpaper is free.
Bondo spot putty is free.
Paint is free.
Wire is free.
Switches are free.
Etc Etc.

I don't think you "small parts $30" will cover all that,

People tend to severely underestimate the price of building a portable.

Now I'm thinking of doing a GCp because it seems much cooler an I already have 2 broken gamecubes. The only bad part is the info on how to do it isn't as direct as the N64 and there's no exact guides or tutorials.
