SNES USB controller for PC gaming?
Moderator:Moderators
Is this a possible mod to do, without buying any adapters? And does anyone know if there are existing drivers for this if so? I pop my wired xbox360 for some pc gaming but when I play old snes games through ZSNES it'd be nice to have an original SNES pad to use for it. There was some video I saw on youtube of a guy who cut the end of his SNES controller and took an old printer parallel port cable and rewired it that way, has anyone ever done this before or know which way would be easiest?
Thanks

I didn't actually sit through the whole 10 minute video, but it looked like what you were asking about.
...except it isn't USB...
Ahhh, I fail...

I have googled it before... the point was to find out if it's doable to make one myself instead of buying an existing one, but thanks

Either way you will need an adapter, whether you build it yourself or not.
You can interface to the midi or parallel port without much / any circuitry, but USB would require reencoding the serial data from the SNES controller as a USB HID signal (other USB data formats would work, but this would require pretty much no drivers)

This involves using a keyboard controller board to make the controller USB. I have done this myself several times. The article is for a NES controller, but the principal is exactly the same. And you don't need the hub if you only want the USB interface.

You can also use an atmega8, if you got a programmer

How similar are the pin-outs for the SNES and PlayStation controllers? It might be possible to cannibalize the connectors from an SNES and get them to work with the existing PlayStation-to-USB controller adapters.

Re: SNES USB controller for PC gaming?
One other possibility that would still be cheap would be using an existing USB controller and wiring it inside the SNES controller. A bit of work, but no adapter needed at that point.
