First N64p project...advice/help?

Post by ToastBucket » Wed Jan 27, 2010 11:48 pm

So this weekend I started work on a portable N64. This is my first time making an N64p or anything involving soldering and whatnot. I have some tactile switches on the way to relocate the start button and to use for the L, R, and Z. Any advice would be appreciated.

Im planning on making another when I'm done. To reduce size I would like to use two PSP battery packs. Will this work because two of them can generate 7.2V and 3600maH each...allowing a lot of playing time and they take up a very small amount of space.
This place is fun.

You might want to shrink your GARGANTUAN avatar! They're only supposed to be like 150 x 150. Otherwise progress is looking good 8)

3600 mah won't power a n64 for TOO long, mind you. With the ps1 screen, it should be about 2-2 and a half hours battery life.(I think)

With a modded Psone screen. Unmodded and you only get 1 3/4 hours.

I have an unmodded screen. I don't have PSP batteries this time. I have a 12-cell 3000 maH battery circuit...I could replace my current with PSP batteries though (2 would make 7.2v with 7200maH) :?:

7200mAh is much better. Should get you around 3.5 hrs if you mod your screen.

How would I go around LED modding my screen? Will this make it brighter as well?

There are guides in the Screen section I think.

No it does not make it brighter. It does make it have less contrast and more "washed out" looking.

Yes exactly. It is simply a measure to increase battery life.

Alright well I'll try to LED mod it. For tatile switches do I need those weird grid things with holes?

First off, a normal psp battery is around 3.6v 1200 mah.
This means you would need 4 batteries to get 7.2v 2400mah.

You'd still need 4 of them to double the voltage and the capacity.

3.6 + 3.6 = 7.2. I used my calculator.

Yes, but adding a second battery can either double voltage OR capacity, not both. That's why you need four to double both: two sets of batteries wired in series, wired in parallel.

That's why you're really best to just order a decent-capacity 7.2v battery, rather than messing around with PSP batteries.
