how to split a controller

guys i almost finished my snes portable but one issues reamains thats the spliting of the controller i have a original snes controller but i already tryed and broke one so can any one help me out with maybe a diagram or such plz

Do you mean split the controller in half, so the buttons will be on either side of the screen? If so, it will be a lot easier just to scrape off the contacts on the controller itself (the flat black things where the buttons go), and solder tact switches from those.
