Does this have a modchip?
Moderator:Moderators
I bought a dreamcast with 2 controllers and all the cables for 14 dollars at value village today. It has a burnt game called sports jam in it and it works. I am wondering if its got a mod chip or something or if its just something they can do? What other cool things can it do? Thanks

Re: Does this have a modchip?
Pretty sure you don't need a modchip for Dreamcast - the security for the GD-ROM was cracked early on.
Re: Does this have a modchip?
Yea i guess you dont i read a little more on it but i sure was surprized.
Re: Does this have a modchip?
Eagle is right. Most dreamcast systems can play "burned" games without a problem. Only a very small amount of systems made toward the end of the dreamcast's life are unable to do so.

Haha i dont get why they made it so easy to pirate but hey im not gunna complain this is freaking awesome. Best 14 dollars ive ever spent.

ANY Dreamcast from ANY production date will play burned games. Some systems not being able to so is a myth created by crappy cdr-media and "if it's on the internet it must be true."

Are you sure? I've seen plenty of respectable sites like DC Emulation say otherwise. I know that all European DCs can play burned games, but I've always heard that the newer North American systems have issues with them.wallydawg wrote:Zero_D wrote:Eagle is right. Can you provide a link demonstrating that all dreamcasts can play burned games? It would actually come in handy next time I see a dreamcast at my local flea market or goodwill if I wouldn't have to check the bottom every time.
Re: Does this have a modchip?
I think wally is right my dreamcast is one of the newer white ones and its from north America. So far ive burned 3 games all work fine. Ill probably play this more then xbox 360.

All DC's can.
I have one from the last production (2006-ish) and it plays burned games no problem.

I never knew they made the consoles up until so recently. I mean, I knew about how games were made til 2007, but It just didn't seem like sega had a need to make any more Dreamcasts.
rest in peace, Ronnie James Dio! \m/

I'm guessing you have a Japanese one? Because the North American ones were discontinued in 2001, but the Japanese ones were still sold up to 2006.AfroLH wrote:All DC's can.

But either way, it still plays burned games no problem.

Interesting, the board I am modding is 1999. It also has a board for the DC CD unit as well as the motherboard.
