The N64 Advance

Post by Gamelver » Mon Sep 08, 2008 8:54 pm

Ok, this is my next big portable, besides that GCp I have to finish up so I can sell...

I call it The N64 Advance

It's a small-as-possible N64 portable (already got the mobo cut down very nicely, and will soon post pinouts of the cartridge slot pins) with a case in the shape of a kind of fat GBA. I've already designed the case with parts (drew the designs right on my table, with the circuit boards :P) and it'll be about 1.5" thick, around 3.75" tall, and maybe 6.5"-7" wide (z, y, and x, respectively). The cartridge slides in from the side.

I'll be posting my info here and pictures of my progress. Tomorrow I'll be rewiring the cartridge slot and motherboard parts (capacitors need to be moved :P...pics and pinouts soon!
Without games my life would have no meaning.
Well, I guess it would, but it would be a lot less fun!!!!!!!

Sounds cool!

Right now, I am trying to make the smallest "full featured" (RAM pack, dpad, video out, the works) N64p. After that, I want to make a less featured, but uber-small one.

Gamelver, do you think it is possible to fit an N64p in a GameGear?

Not a whole N64p. Something would have to stick out. The cartridge, mobo, and screen certainly wouldn't fit.

Which is my case will be slightly thicker than a Gamegear ;). Not much thicker, though...

I think that everything except the cart could fit inside, with the cart mounted on the back. I might even be able to set it into the case a little bit.

Eh, but what chance do I, a mere mortal, stand against you, a portable god!

BTW, I have made what I define as a portable for the compo. How do I get my "portabilizer" title?

good luck getting the portableizer logo, I and many others remain title less. Also, haza I still win in the thickness department! well that is if I ever finish the freaking thing.

Gordon1 - PM the mods for the title, one after the other until one of them gets you the title.

palmertech - Unlikely you will get "Portablizer" title for your GBA in a GBO system, as the GBA was already a portable when you started; you get the title for making a system into a handheld that wasn't to start with so. That was the ruling a while back. Make your N64p and you should get the title...

ah, I forgot to ask...

Anyone know where I can find a 4 inch screen?

I found a Casio that might work, but I can't be sure of the screen's thinness, though it's probably thin enough....if anyone knows of a good place for LCDs (like the kind we use :P), please let me know. I've been out of touch with electronics in general for a while now and could use some help...

The closest I can think of is a 3.5 inch screen on deal extreme.

just so you know, this screen has no speaker, so you'll need to do an audio amp. otherwise, it's a pretty great screen! super thin, and the board is the exact height and width of the screen itself. and both together are super thin!
they call me the Queen of Bondo, though maybe i should be called the Queen of Epoxy Putty

Mobo size as of...right now: 5.25"x3.75"

I basically cut off all the ports and solder directly onto the mobo. Like a Radica, only bigger :P

There's a 4inch AEI Components screen; it's pricey though: $198. :?

So will it look similar to the L64 perhaps? By the way if you make that case to the specs it should look great. I assume this is a fully functional portable unlike Siuf's latest offering?

Good luck with getting the title Palmertech. I got told that Mods did not have the power to give titles and that you had to PM an admin to get a title. I've tried but have had no success.

EDIT: hang on I'm a portablizer just noticed then YEEESSSSSS!!!!!!!

Can't wait to see this project progress.

I can see how you can get it down to 5.5" x 4.5" without too many issues, however don't see how you make it smaller still, intrigued. Any chance you can post a pic of an unreduced board and mark on where the cut lines are to reduce to the dimensions you mention and what you need to relocate in the process? These things are always interesting to see.
