my Sweet64 progress thread!

Post by Master of Portables » Fri Mar 02, 2007 7:22 am

after the completion of my first portable, the SNES Boy... i want to try something harder, you guessed it an N64. I have started collecting parts, and working on planning my case. it will be Vac formed, and i hope it will be at least as good as marshal's/turbos if not better   I am also thinking of electric rain's idea of replacing the crappy joystick with a game cube controller joystick. also another note, i am writing a very in depth tutorial while making this portable to help n00bs world wide!or at least forum wide i guess... when i get stuff done and take pics for my tutorial i will post them in this thread as a log.

EDIT:updated status 7/19/07

*Case 75% I have most of the controller pieces bondoed in, but I have a little speed bump, as I can't seem to get a Game Cube controller open without killing the case...

*Wiring 10% Most of the things that are unnecessary have been removed from the N64!

*Power 30% Got my battery today, and opened it up!

*Controller 50% I have the controller gutted and the controller case dremeled.

*Screen 0% I don't have one :( .

Just...try not to... touch the board too much. I've had 3 boards stop working with no bang or pop or smoke or smell just stop working. Maybe because i was constantly fingering it while thinking but... yeah

Don't do like me and arc the 7.2v to the 3.3v line, it doesn't like it.

as of now it is out and working... i didn't even destroy the case! what i did was use my drill around each screw so i could put my pliers around it and twist it out. got to add a lot to my guide :P

ok, an update, i can't cut off the walls of the rest of the controller pieces because i accidentally dropped my dremel and the cut off disc broke :( :( :( :( i will post pics of my adventure!
Image
The controller guts and buttons
Image
The poor game cube controller i sacrificed :D
Image
muhahahahaaaaaa! the controller partially dremeled
Image
oh look, my N64 came in the mail..."no! i am screwed!" the N64 thinks
Image
the N64 exposed, proof I didn't have to rip the case open.
Image
The metal shielding torn off,I had to drill a screw off because it was stripped
Image
See! it still works!
Image
that is the controller piece for the analog stick and start button, after sanding it with 600 grit sand paper for two hours while watching my brother and his friend fail 94 times on their catapult project, it's smooth as hell!

You do realise you need a 3rd party cntroller to replace it with a gamecube analog joystick. Right? (just making sure)

Are you running that on carpet!?!? Do you want it to die?? Because if you run it on carpet, chances are it won't still work.

carpet is bad,

jeroen is right if you wanna use the GC joystick like i did you need a 3rd party controller.

I used a third party controllers guts and a GC controller joystick and a first party controller's pc board
