Version 1 SNES, power problems

Post by Cyberblade » Wed Jun 30, 2004 8:54 pm

I have my old SNES apart, and a screen is on it's way from Ebay, but I cant seem to get my SNES to run off of batteries. I've figured out the amount of rechargable AA's I need to get it to run, and have tried running it off that, but all it does is flicker on for about half a second, then shut off. The batteries are fine, as 5 minutes later, I can flicker it on again, and they still run my Nomad at full. I can't use the old DC jack, as I kinda broke that taking the bugger apart, but I figured between the power switch and the DC I could cut the wire and insert the battery pack there using the labels on the switch as my guide for positive and negative. I'd post pictures, but unfortunately, my cameras batteries died on me, and we're outta AAA's. Can someone help me get this thing on?

How many batteries are you using? With rechargable AAs, you need to have at least 6. Also, I ran mine off of a 9V and it powered it for over 30 minutes, so if that is less than 250mA, I don't see why the AAs would only work for 5 minutes.

I'm attempting to run it off my Nomads battery pack. It's flicking on for about a half second, but I can't get it to stay on. It's not that the batteries don't have enough power, as they work perfectly fine back on the Nomad, but I can't seem to get my SNES to stay on. I could also flick it on with a 9 volt, but couldn't get more then the same half a second. The polarities are right, and the voltage is good, but it won't stay on for more then a half a second.

This pic shows quite well where I'm trying to connect the SNES to the Nomad battery pack.

Well, I got a better battery pack, but hit a large problem, on accident, I fried my SNES. I can't even get it to flicker on now. I think it's just the SNES though, as it's very old, and has gone through a lot of beating since we got it.

Yeah, the picture looks like a 1990 snes. I'd recomend one from at least 1991 and on. They normally have the sound chips actually on the main board instead of in that box behind the cartridge port.
Also, you might have just blown the fuse on your snes.

Where is this fuse? Is it repairable?

It's the big black thing on the top right of the board. It doesn't have any pcb under it either.
I would just jump it with a piece of wire, although it might be a good idea to replace it.

Uhm, the only big black thing on the top right is the plug for the sound chip and stuff.

Oh, that thing. Perhaps, but come to think of it, this SNES was working like crap before taking it apart. It's prolly doing even worse now. XD. I've fixed up a way to run my other (non apart, and never going to be apart) SNES off of batteries using the extra AC cord, and I think I'll just buy another SNES from gamestop or a garage sale or something, and use that on it. Tis much easier then trying to hardwire everything together.

Alright I just killed my snes as well and im hoping i just blew the fuse. You say i can possibly jumpstart it with a wire? If you don't mind could you go into a litle detail on how to do so?

I've got my system open and i see the fuse, but how do i jumpstart it?
