does anyone know what d004 does on the psone?

Includes but not limited to: SNES, Genesis, Sega CD, PlayStation 1, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, Game Gear and I guess the Virtual Boy.

does anyone know what d004 does on the psone?

Post by devileyebrows42 » Tue Sep 14, 2010 2:49 pm

Im building the psone from the book with little success. i can seem to get the whole thing running. i connected the psone to a 7.2 volt infolithium L battery and D004 on the psone turned bright orange and started burning. now that small part of the board is fried. is my board dead?

It might be repairable if "D 004" is a clipping diode, and it failed short instead of open.

Do you have a multimeter?

Well, I would reccomend looking up a PSone Schematic and then track that down.

Also, I reckon that the board is fried (Well, a part on the PCB to be sure).

Another thing, is to not get all of your information from the book. It does not have as much information as these forums (Ben Heck), and a few others do. Such as Llamma Forums, ModRetro Forums, Bacteria Forums and the Haunted Games Forums.

If you are new to electronics, google a few things. Such as how LED's, SMT / SMD's work. It is helpful to know!

Thanks, and I am happy to help you with any modifications you may need

yeah i have a multimeter. thanks for the help. should i just try bypassing d004 with a piece of wire?

 no.

Find out what value it is supposed to be, and replace it with an equivalent.

Maybe:
freeinfosociety.comSony Playstation Schematic

Can you tell us what model it is, and post a pic of the suspect part?

EDIT:
I got the schematic for the Playstation SCPH-101 from eserviceinfo.com, and mirrored it docs.google.comSchematic_Diagram_PSONE_Sony_SCPH-101_noPW.pdf.

page 12 (figure 5-33/34), Diode D004 is MA8120-TX, a 12V zener diode in clipping config.

A direct replacement is availble from digikey.ca for 48-43¢ +$8 shipping.
Or you cuold splurge and buy a 500mW diode instead of a 200mW for 54¢ +$8 shipping.

I don't think that this diode would overload unless
  1. the positive input voltage exceeded 12V
    or
  2. the polarity was reversed
Please double check your battery connections against the schematic (and measure the voltage). The playstaion will work without it, but it is there to ensure that ~8V (7.4V) line does not exceed +12V or drop below -1V.

NEVER close the circuit with a wire where a diode was :!:

Ok thanks. I probably reversed the polarity by accident

I'll post some pictures of the burnt part as soon as possible

ive encountered a problem with the portable as a whole. i tested the burnt part against my multimeter and it still seems to work, the only problem is nether the system nor the screen work when i test it even though ive already tested the screen with its power adapter. i dont think its the battery because i ran a psone screen with it just fine. i also tested to see if i had a complete circuit with my multimeter and everything looks fine. its not the wire im using because i ran a psone screen with the same 28 gauge (I think) wire. ive looked over bens diagram several times to check my connections but it doesnt help cause i have them all soldered correctly. Except i noticed that ben's screen in the last diagram of the cnc built psone is different that the diagram he says to wire it up with. he connected three wires to his dc input jack when the diagram says to connect only two (one to the top lead, positive, and another to the tv's bottom lead, ground) Has anyone worked with casios? if so how do you connect power to the dc input leads? does anyone have any ideas as to why my portable doesnt work?

:| Your multimeter has a +12V diode check?

+ ━►∫━ -
Forward Voltage (Vf) = 1V

+ ━∫◄━ -
Zener Voltage (Vz) = 12V

its automatic. i just checked continuity and it seems to work.

:| It isn't supposed to have continuity... it's suposed to have a forward junction voltage of 1V and a reverse of 12 (or open if the meter can't read that high).

I also gavehim a semi broken board so he can just switch components. I'll try to keep you posted. Thanks for the help again
