The Tinypnes worklog

Post by themadhacker » Thu Nov 05, 2009 7:08 pm

Ok, so I have been working on this for quite some time now, so I might as well go and post my progress here. No pics now, but I have a video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLQ2i99guLU" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

BTW that is not my house in the video. It is my pole barn.

Now about the title. Tinypnes. well, I got to cut the nes down quite a bit and fit it into a gamegear case. That is pretty tiny for a portable using REAL nes hardware. None of that OAC crap for me. So I thought I would call it the TinyPnes. It's a pretty fun name. i'll give you all an example.

guy: what did you do yesterday?
Me: played with my TinyPnes.
guy: uh.... sorry I asked.

Did you run into any obstacles when you cut it down? Were any relocations/jumpers required? The reason I ask, is in my future project, there will be little room for an original NES motherboard. Would you be able to take a close pic of the motherboard and the dimensions?

I didn't run into any large obstacles, but I did have to jump some ground (the nes slot pin on the far left is ground and stopped at a dead end after cutting so I just got ground from a different area) and I had to relocate a small section of the top right had corner of the board (the part wuth the orange capacitors lined up leading to the P1 port).

thanks, though I am not going to call it the blacktinypnes. I would though if it was painted black.

I decided I want internal batteries, so the tinypnes needed to be a bit bigger.

In other news, I have wired my two psp batteries in parallel to get 7200 mah and wired them to a step up regulator from ti to get 7 volts. I am unsure how much battery life I will get though, because I doubt using a step up regulator is very efficient.

Oh, and my screen is going to be pretty bright because I managed to fit 8 LEDs in it.

EDIT:

I am sad to say that I decided against using game genie.

I will make up for it somehow.

maybe I'll give it stereo sound.

Paint!

yeah, there are a lot of flaws on the front, even though I sanded and repainted already. ah well, I may sand again, but I don't want to paint too many times because the buttons will stick.

If you keep sanding, you'll wear down the current layer of paint enough to keep going until you're happy with it.

Other than a few flaws in the paint (which you're working on), it looks great so far!

oh, I know. I just hate sanding.

It's terribly boring.

In fact, I don't know which is more boring: sanding or cart slot relocation.

Sanding. Absolutely. At least with cart slot relocation you have a clear end (there are only 70 or so pins), whereas sanding can go on forever if you're OCD (which I am slightly  ).

oh, trust me. I am very ocd. I have been working on this for nearly a year, and this is the third case I have settled on.

But I just sanded down the paint even more anyway, and from what I did, it should look a bit better. but we will find that out tomorrow afternoon.

to fit the nes, I had to trim the board a lot.
