Close...but not quite....

SMALL UPDATE
Been fiddling with the new screen...still can't figure out why it's making the screen so much brighter on low voltage. I'm tossing 'round the idea that I'm just gonna slap a couple resistors with plenty of hot glue to disperse heat into the thing and just roll with it.

As for the case, took some measurements, and I'm getting the woodstuff ready for mold making action! ...more to come over the weekend :)

EDIT! Just had a brilliant idea for my screen issue just now!!! More to come ;)

Is the

Code: Select all

.. -.. --- -. --- - - .... .. -. ... --- .-.-.-
--- --- .--. --..-- -.-. .-.. -- -.-- ..-. .. .-. ... - -- . ... ... .- --. . --- .- -.-. -.-. .. -.. . -. -
in your signature Morse Code?

It looks like

Code: Select all

Idonotthinso.
Oop,clmyfirstmessageoaccident
Is it hint to the other project?

Ok, quick update.

Got a new screen, got it running happily with the retro-bit and audio amp off of the less than 6v being put out of 4 weak AA batteries :)

As for the case, created the mold...Pictures to come eventually.

Sometime soon, The molding process will begin! yay!

OK, so here's an update with pics! yay! Finally started to get to the case work. Having some issues with the vac table...BUT, that's due to be fixed over this coming weekend.

As for the mold, that's finished....

One more to get an idea on size....

Nextly! I butchered one of my NES controllers. The controller itself was shot, so there's no real loss here (plus I have a bazillion sitting around). Why butcher? cause I needed the button delees so my controller feels right :)

First part removed was the Start/Select spot
Image

Then, I amputated the D-pad...
Image

Then lastly, I removed the A/B buttons.

Here's the buttons next to the screen in what will be the final layout for the buttons.

Hopefully will finally get around to the vac-forming process sometime soon.......

Probably the NES, since it has far fewer parts that can die on it, lol.

What case? I guess it depends on what you're using. If you're using an original NES mobo, even with cutting down, I think you'd still have to build a case for it.

The most popular case (I believe) is the ZN-45 case. I dunno were you can get it off the top of my head, but I'm certain that with a quick look around on the board; you'll find out where to get one.

BUT ANYWAY...

...TIME FOR AN UPDATE!

Started the vac-forming last night....with mixed results....Yeah, my really sub-par vac table worked flawlessly...but the first molded plastic case halves failed to get fully molded... I've since solved that problem by putting only one half of the mold on the table, rather than both at once.

As for the screwed up case parts, I chopped them out as practice for my eventual final cuts. Screwed up on a few points, but that's why I'm using the bad parts for practice.

I'll post some pics of the failure, and the (more or less) cutting success of the failure tomorrow. --which will effectively show how the completed unit will appear pretty much, minus the final sanding and painting :)

Stay tuned!

All right then, here's some pics of progress!

A shot of the operation in action..deep inside my beastly oven....with special help from 4 empty beef stew cans :)
Image

The first attempt...which was a failure for the most part, but still was useful just the same.
Image

The first almost successful run...too bad I forgot to lube the wood for it
Image

The failed mold with many a hole cut in it for the sake of practice, and a game tossed in back to size it up.
Image

A side-by-side comparison of the Mark 2 versus the original Mark1...the overall thickness will be just about the same as the mk1, but the width will be slightly less and, as you can see here, the height will be significantly less 8)
Image

Coming soon......the completed case halves!!!
