The making of... "NESp Delight" blog

Hi all,

For the past couple weeks I have been working on a NES portable I've dubbed the "NESp Delight". So far I have the case constructed and the cartridge port soldered to the system board. These forums have been very helpful in the making of my first portable so I wanted to share.

I found the Datamax at a Salvation Army thrift store. I did find another Datamax but I plan on making a NESp Delight II with a SJ3 and internal batteries. I can keep my eye out for more for ya. I did see some for sale at a Drug Mart here in OH around Christmas time. I think they were trying to sell them for $20 bucks. I'm not sure how much you are looking to spend. I did a quick search on Ebay and nothing came up. Must not of sold well or they were thrown away because the "games" are so terrible.

I just wanted to update this thread. The NESp Delight is about 97% complete. Everything is working great.

Good work. Two tone colour schemes are "definitely in". Nice case and good you recycled it! I wondered initially why the system was so big for a NES system, then I noticed you are using a proper full-sized board, so fair enough!

When I made my first system, the BigBoy advance (utter crap by my current standards, but worked), I used a set of 6 NiMH AA cells to power the screen (and another set for the GBA Transverter); I think I only got a bit over an hour on them, which isn't great by any means.

I read about your horrors of the spray painting. A few tips for when you do it again.

1. Shake the can for a minute, so the ball can roll from one end of the can to the other when you slowly tilt it.
2. Get a tub of warm water (not HOT!) and place the can upright in it. This will warm up the paint and the paint diffuses MUCH better.
3. If the can starts clogging, turn it upside down and then spray on a scrap piece of cardboard. This cleans the nozzle.
4. Plastic primer DOES work, it might turn out better with these tips. Also when using the primer or krylon fusion, just lightly sand the surface so the paint adheres better.

Good job! I just checked it out at MGC, and it was great, and good size for using a full NES board. Now I need to get in gear and make a portable before MGC '10
