Hi, I have looked around on the internet, and found that there are only very few ps3 laptops, why is this? I have just finished making a xbox 360 laptop, and thought it would be nice to work on the other side of things, with a ps3 slim, it also looks much less hard work. Before I can get started, I would need to save up and buy the following things;
PS3 Slim
AOC Razor e943Fw led monitor
SSD Drive
CNC Cut Case from 10mm sheets of sintra/foamex
Blue colour theme and lights
HDMI to DVI connection (720p)
Ultra quite cooling system (use stock fan or other?)
Make the laptop as Slim laptop
Slot loading drive
Spray Painted matt black with blue highlights
The biggest problem is getting hold of the foamex/sintra in the UK, anybody know where I could get some?
Another problem is, that if I want to make the laptop as thin as the height of the slot loading blu ray drive, then I am going to have to modify the cooling system. I have not found any other heatsinks that fit on the system, so how would I do this?
I am planning on using the slot loading drive, and also buying an ssd so that the system is very rugged, and is not affected by shocks, so it can be used in a car, train, etc. It will also give a big speed boost for the system.
I am thinking about selling my xbox 360 laptop to buy all the parts, how much would I get for my xbox 360 laptop? (got to my website in the link below and then click on photos)
Also, I have just installed autocad 2010, is this the right program to make the 3d cnc files on?
Thanks
Seb Smith

Re: Thoughts about a making a PS3 slim laptop!
just use the hdd that is stock in the console, it will save you a couple hundred. but if you want to sacrifice the money, by all means plus the hdd shouldn't be disturbed through small bumps caused by a car trip of train ride.
The plastic should be accessible via a plastic supplier, i go to an industrial park and buy mine in huge sheets.
have you considered watercooling
i had plans for a ps3 laptop...yellow with a biohazard theme

Re: Thoughts about a making a PS3 slim laptop!
well, if i have enough money for the ssd, then i will probably go ahead with it.
a yellow theme would look nice!
i am probably not going to go down the water cooling raod, as it will make it too expensive, hard to make and unportable. I am wondering though, how high are the ps3 stock fans from the top of the motherboard, and could they possibly be somehow slimmed down,
thanks for the help,
seb smith

Re: Thoughts about a making a PS3 slim laptop!
THe stock fan and heatsink are basically one, the fan is a 200mm drum and it sits in a reces in the heatsink.
I personally would try and get a video card heatsink working on it. Plus a couple of small fans for creating the airflow.
the heatsink thickness, i dont have exact mesurments atm.
the black thing is the cooling unit
xbox laptop will go for anything between $500 and $1200

thanks for the help!
are there any heatsinks i could buy that would fit the ps3, or would i have to mod one or create my own?
or would it be possible to somehow slim down the existing one?
thanks

Re: Thoughts about a making a PS3 slim laptop!
The cooling is similar to that of a laptop or notebook as it has a large one of these:
people have been fityting pc heatsinks to the mobo, but using extension brackets etc.
you could have a look into that

Re: Thoughts about a making a PS3 slim laptop!
n and found that this has been done and is possible
it would maybe even be possible to not make a special fitting bracket for cpu coolers with a big flat bottom, as i could just drill holes in it.
i was thinking about something like this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Arctic-Cooling-Fr ... 1379wt_702
If i were to remove the top fan, and then install ones that blows across, like the ps3 stock setup, i think it might work well
this one ios also a possibility: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/T180-Low-Profile- ... 2710wt_867
thanks for the help

Re: Thoughts about a making a PS3 slim laptop!
what is this, spambot.com?
gtfo
like those heatsinks, yea.
but make sure you get measurements before you buy them, the 'bends' on the legs of the second one may get in the way.
you will need two.

Re: Thoughts about a making a PS3 slim laptop!
just been trying for the last few days to source some foamex, but I cant find any! Would it be possible to make it from pvc sheet?
I can get this very cheaply, and in thicknesses upto 50mm, so it would be work?
also the sheet is grey, would spray paint on it fine?
thanks

Re: Thoughts about a making a PS3 slim laptop!
er, pvc..
i guess it should be good, a thick sheet would be good to stop warping.
Krylon fusion is made to bond with plasics, if you dont already get some of that.

Re: Thoughts about a making a PS3 slim laptop!
im not too sure, im just picturing a pvc pipe layed out flat
the only plastics i have experiance with are acrylic, hips and abs.
Im looking at a local site that sells it in thicknes from 0.5mm to 70mm
Im guessing it would be good for routing, ask your choosen cnc place
