Wii Disc Drive

Post by winpod » Tue Dec 14, 2010 7:27 pm

Oookay, so in an effort to save battery life/space I took the disc drive out of my Wii. Nothing new here. However, using Wii loader GX (and, I'm assuming, any other loader) to try and boot games off of a flash drive, I get an error message unless I reconnect the drive. Are there any known workarounds, fixes, anything for this? Information on even related subjects is very scant. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Connecting what directly, exactly?

I remember Palmer mentioning a device called a Sundriver, it connects you hard drive directly to the Wii Disk drive, and emulates the hardware of the DD so the wii thinks it's still pugged in. you open games through a custom menu which can be selected through the game disk channel.

Ah, I did read about that... although it kinda defeats the purpose of taking the drive out to save space ;P But that is probably what I'll end up doing.

I'm pretty sure the sundriver connects by USB, a Flash stick might work

The Sundriver itself, from what I understand, replaces the Wii's DVD drive using the same two connections. I was just hoping for a way to "trick" the Wii into thinking it had a drive connected.

whats wrong with that? it connects to the same places but is still small enough to fit inside the wii with the disk drive still in it (it works as a pass through port) but the drive can be removed

A flash drive is much more compact, and I'm assuming it would consume less battery power than a disc drive - no moving parts.
