Re: Slim backwards compatible
Backwards compatibility is due to some specific PS2 hardware, most notably the "emotion engine" chip.
No, you can't make a slim PS3 backwards compatible. Your only hope is that Sony enables backwards compatibility through emulation the way the XBox 360 does for many XBox titles. However, the chances of this are, well, slim.

Re: Slim backwards compatible
I am sure they intentionally left it out since they still manufacture and sell the ps2.
Re: Slim backwards compatible
Older PS3s supported BC with PS2 games pretty much completely through hardware, Sony then removed the EE from the PS3 to lower costs and subsequent models played PS2 games by using a mix of a software emulator and the PS2's GPU hardware (as far as I remember anyway). Sony then made another revision and removed the PS2 GPU as well to lower production costs even more, but rather than revise their software emulator to emulate both the EE and the GPU, they just dropped support completely. This all happened before the slim was even released. The reason that PS1 games were unaffected and work on all PS3 consoles is because these were ran using 100% software emulation since the beginning.

Re: Slim backwards compatible
The PS3 (like the PS2 before it) uses the PS1's R3000 CPU as the I/O controller. That's one of the reasons why PS1 emulation has worked so well on both systems.
