Xbox 360 Small Heatsink

Post by ssmith43654 » Thu Sep 23, 2010 1:27 pm

I am making a xbox laptop and I want to make a smaller cpu heatsink. The gpu heatsink i will leave as it is as it is fairly slim. I thought of just cutting the jasper heatsink down to the level of the dvd drive but will this make it overheat? Is there any other slim heatsink that I could get cheaply (I am in the U.K.) I don't want to do what ben heck suggest in his tutorial. Also does anyone know how ben heck cools his xbox laptop revision 5 :?: :?: :?:

I'm sure cutting the jasper heatsink down would work fine as long as you don't cut the copper tube in it and it has some good air flow. If you want a slim cpu heatsink though here's one humakabula1 recommended to me.

Yes i was going to use that one and he recommended that one to me also but here in the uk it would cost £50 (78$) to get it. And the heatsink i am using looks like this for the cpu -

there is no copper pipe, do you think it would be still safe to cut it down?

Well when you cut it down it has less metal for the heat to sink into so it would get hotter but, with some good air flow it would probably be fine since it is a jasper motherboard. How much did you want to cut off it?
Also that heatsink will probablt be really hard to cut down. What are you planning on cutting it with?

Best thing to do is get a pair of passive copper 1U LGA775 heatsinks, and put a blower fan on them, blowing across and through both sets of fins.

He was looking for a cheap solution. I would get the Thermolab nano silencer before going for what wizzard1 recommended. I don't believe anyone has used one of those heatsinks on a 360 before and with the nano silencer it has the fan on the top so it would save you the hassle of relocating a bunch of capacitors to increase the air flow.

Just try cutting it down first and put some fans in front of it blowing air through and some fans on the other side sucking the air out and you should be fine.

There is NO way that Nano cooler can beat the low-temp all this copper would provide :)

I think i will go for the copper one you suggested - will it fit the xbox' motherboard? I plan to cut of the heatsink at the bit where it stops going up at an angle , about halfway up. The thermolab cooler costs way too much here in the uk as i would need to pay shipping aswell.

i have posed a couple of cooling solutions on these boards, one of them being the nano silencer,
the other one is this;
Image
its 0.9cm thiner than the nano silencer. (3cm flat)
and here is one i was going to save for a later date but i'll post it now :wink:
Image
this one is damn awesome in terms of cooling, although it comes in at 3.6cm tall
