The best way to fixe a 3 RRDOD?

Post by ssmith43654 » Mon Sep 06, 2010 2:24 pm

When testing my xbox 360 elite(jasper) with the new screen (I am making a xbox 360 laptop) the fan duct (the white bit) was very slightly wonky because of my flattened caps in the way. I heard the fan going stronger and then it showed the 3 red lights :oops: . I am sure this is caused by the overheating. I turned it of immediately. I have cleaned the heat sinks and I am going to put on Arctic silver 5 and do the x-clamp fix. Do you think this will solve the 3 red lights or will I have to do more(e.g overheating the gpu but not cpu to resolder the joints-will this damage my xbox?) How could I fix It?

Thanks

the 3 RROD issue can be caused by a number of factors. Most now feel that it is caused by the GPU needing to have a reflow of it's solder. This is likely the primary cause of the 3 RROD. The X-Clamp doesn't actually fix this issue, it just applies more pressure to the GPU forcing it to make contact. Proactively doing this "solution" doesn't prevent the issue from happening. A heat gun fix likely will result in the same end game. This is also why the "towel trick" works.

In your case, it sounds like the GPU overheated and the system reacted the way it's supposed to. The fans probably sped up real fast for three seconds and then shut off (trying to push as much air out as they could while shutting down). simply remounting the heatsinks should resolve the issue for you, and it sounds like that is what you have already done.

it still doesn't work :x :x :x :x :x , after remounting heatsinks, doing the x-clamp fix and adding arctic silver 5. I fitted the new dual heatsink gpu cooler on this time and still doesnt work. Theis is really anoyying and it will be a waste of a (was) perfectly fine nearly brand new jasper board. Please HELP :idea: :idea: :oops:

Thanks for advice btw.

Sould I try overheating the gpu to resolder the joints??

before you jump the gun and go straight to a reflow, I would be interested to know what the error code is. I cannot remember how to get the primary and secondary error code but google it and it will tell you what the issue is. If it's GPU failure/overheat then we know that there is a problem with the x-clamp and that it isn't evenly distributing the pressure. If it's memory failure related to the GPU then you possibly bumped a component on the board. I would be tempted to put it back into the original case and see if it gives you the same issue. If it does that's fine, if it doesn't then you know the new case is wrong.

There are a lot of options available, but I somehow doubt that the solder joints broke when you were taking it apart so I don't think a heat gun solution is right for your needs. I think that the X-clamp just hasn't been done right.

I will make a video of it and upload it to youtube and give you the link so you can see my what is wrong with it.

i think a proper reflow will help you out from seeing that you tried the x clamp already but still need the secondary error code to narrow down your problem

heres some instruction on how to retrieve it
--==SECONDARY ERROR CODES==-
The specific type of hardware failure can be determined by a "hidden" error code

* Turn the xbox 360 on, and wait till the 3 red lights are flashing.
* Press and hold the sync up button (the small white one), while holding that button press the eject button.
* The LEDs will now blink the first number in the code (as described below).
* Release the eject button and press it again.
* The LEDs will now blink the second number of the code.
* Release the eject button and press it again.
* The LEDs will now blink the third number of the code.
* Release the eject button and press it again.
* The LEDs will now blink the forth number of the code.
* Release the eject button and press it again.
* The LEDs will go back to the 3 red flashing lights.

You should be able to determine the difference between the 3 flashing lights and the error code lights by the rate in which they flash.

Here is how you interpret the LEDs to get the code number:

* All four lights flashing - 0
* One light flashing - 1
* Two Lights flashing - 2
* Three lights flashing - 3

0001 power supply problem
0002 Network Interface problem
0003 Power problem could be the PSU could be the GPU/CPU, somehow the console isn't getting clean power from the power supply.
0010 over heating
0011 over heating - If you are receiving this error after disassembling your console make sure to all 8 of the heatsync screws are tightened securely to the board/heatsink holes.
0012 over heating
0013 over heating
0020 (Not yet known, possibly overheating)
0021 DVD Drive Time out - Can be caused by problems with a firmware flash. This is also speculated to sometime be caused by a problem with the southbridge chipset on the motherboard.
0022 GPU Error / GPU Overheating
0023 (not yet known)
...
0101 (not yet known)
0102 unknown error

^- - ^ Out of curiousity;
Can I see the flattened caps in the way of the fan duct?

(Not solving the problem, I'm just curious and didn't get a clear sense of it from the video.)

it comes up as:
4 lights
4 lights
2 lights
2 lights

this translates to the 0022 error code which says there is a GPU Error / GPU Overheating

what should I do?

PS to snow_cat : yes they are flattened caps because I am making a xbox 360 laptop and the xbox was functioning fine with all the flattened caps while i was testing it for a period of time so the flattened caps are not to do with the rrod(although they did get in the way of the air duct a bit)

a proper reflow MIGHT work but with my experience and 0022 it usually ended up needing to be reballed because of cold solder joints under the gpu chip but still try reflowing and hopefully you will luck out

How much Arctic Silver are you applying? You don't want to slab it on, only a thin layer.
The heatsink may not be mounted right too; check that out.

How do I do a reflow/reball the cold solder joints?

Do I need something like a heat gun?

Thanks for all the advice so far

DON'T intentionally overheat the console

you can use various methods to reflow;
oven, heatgun, BGA station etc.

Oven reflow as done by Deary

The ultimate oven reflow as done by Wilhelm
http://forums.llamma.com/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=27890

Heatgun reflow as done at xbox-experts
http://xbox-experts.com/tutorial/heatgu ... isolation/

and a BGA station is expensive, but if you want a tut for it i'll post one :wink:

Thanks - as the xbox only overheated for a few seconds and because its a jasper do you think I could just fix it with a heatgun(there lot's of videos on youtube showing me how to)?
