Hey guys.
Weird thing happened with my readyboost options on my USB stick.
I reformatted my 8gb usb stick from Fat32 to NTFS.
Windows 7 32bit, has a 4gb maximum for readyboost.
But, ever since I switched to NTFS, I'm able to allocate more than 4gb. Heck, its a 8gb USB stick. I've allocated 7.54gb to readyboost.
Anyone else ever encounter this? Did microsoft forget to patch this? lol

Re: Readyboost?
I don't think there is a limit for readyboost, even in 32bit (at least one that low). I think it was the 4GB max filesize in FAT32 that was limiting the size. How much RAM do you have? 4GB of readyboost should be plenty, unless you just want to dedicate the whole flash drive to it so you won't lose any files when it craps out down the road.

Re: Readyboost?
The 4 gig RAM limit on 32 bit OSes isn't "hurrp Microsoft fault derp". 32 bit memory addressing just plain can't count high enough to get past 4 gigs. 32 bit Linux can't do it either. They didn't "forget to patch" anything.
ReadyBoost is tied to the file size limit of the OS.

Re: Readyboost?
Then howd I get past the 4gb limit Bic? Is it because I reformatted the flash drive to ntfs?

Re: Readyboost?
Because ReadyBoost isn't real RAM. It's a pagefile on a flash drive. The data in ReadyBoost is paged in and out of your real RAM as it's needed, just like good old fashioned pagefile.sys.
You can set the page file on your hard drive bigger than 4 gigs, too. (Assuming your C drive is NTFS, as it should be.)
You hit a wall at 4 gigs before because that's the maximum file size under the FAT32 file system.

Can't both 32-bit Windows (certain versions anyway) and 32-bit Linux use PAE to use more than 4GB of RAM?bicostp wrote:The 4 gig RAM limit on 32 bit OSes isn't "hurrp Microsoft fault derp". 32 bit memory addressing just plain can't count high enough to get past 4 gigs. 32 bit Linux can't do it either. Technically you can have what ever limit you want. On Linux by default, from the good ol' days that swap partition (drive for paging files) is set to be twice the amount of the main system memory. This really is overkill now-a-days. Also in response to Hotdog's comment on only being able to use 4GB while having the drive formatted in FAT32 (or vFAT), yes it is. FAT32/vFAT can only handle files sizes at large as 4GB. As NTFS can utilize large file allocation it can use more of the flash ram for the Ready Boot.
Also one thing to consider is that the average flash memory cell has a live of 300,000 rewrites. Ready Boot could kill your flash drive in a few months when theoretically it could last years. Just food for thought.
