Are you using the right click menu, or Library -> Downloads? I haven't used Steam on a Mac (all of mine are too old and PowerPC to run it :( ), but there are a few ways to kick start it.

Try exiting Steam, then moving the 'steamapps/common/Left 4 Dead 2' directory to the Desktop. Restart Steam, try starting the download again. If it goes, exit Steam again and replace the Left 4 Dead 2 folder, overwriting existing files when prompted. Start Steam again and it might recognize how far along it is, effectively restarting the download from where you left off.
