Have you tried running Left for Dead when Steam is in offline mode?

Reinstall Steam. (You should be able to simply run the installer to repair it without deleting any game files.) Then have it download Left 4 Dead from the Library window. As far as I know, retail Left 4 Dead discs don't have the Mac executables on them.

What do you mean by "the run file for Left 4 Dead"? You didn't try to download it through everyone's favorite source for music and gentleman's viewing material, did you? :P
