Core 2 Solo or Celeron Dual Core?

Post by um yea » Wed Oct 21, 2009 7:22 pm

I'm looking at getting a new laptop, what is better. I don't care about batt. life as much as having a fast laptop :D , for old (un-intensive) games and movies.

The Celeron has only 1meg of cache, 1.2ghz clock, and is dual core. (Intel # SU2300)
The Core 2 Solo (other than being a confusing name) has 3meg of cache, 1.4ghz clock, and is single core. (Intel # SU3500)

Other than the listed differences they are the same.

They both suck, but I'd go with the Core 2 Solo if you are playing old games. I doubt old games could even take advantage of dual cores and they probably get more out of clock speed. The extra cache is a plus too.

How much ram? And is there a dedicated GPU, or is it integrated?

Stock both have 2gb :) of ram but i will probably upgrade to 4gb :D .

The Solo's graphics,
Graphics Description: Integrated Graphics
GPU/VPU: Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 4500 MHD
Video Memory: 64MB Dedicated - up to 1695MB Shared

And the Celeron's,
Graphics Description: Integrated Graphics
GPU/VPU: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD
Video Memory: up to 1695MB of Intel® Dynamic Video Memory

Is "Intel® Dynamic Video Memory" the same as shared video memory?

The Laptops are the Acer Aspire AS1410-8414, $450 (Core 2 solo), & the Gateway EC1436u, $400 (Celeron) I'm not concerned about the HDD size.

Quoted for truth. Both of those are junky integrated graphics that will get you basically nowhere in gaming-land. If you want to do any decent gaming, either spend some more, or get a desktop.

Yep, just a fancy name for it. The GMA 4500 seems to be good enough for playing HD videos, but for playing games it isn't too great.
Honestly, if you want a fast laptop, you should probably look at a different model. Celerons and Solos aren't exactly speed demons. What is your priority, speed, size, or price?

Price (Under $500) and Speed, I've looked for some other graphics but all i can find is a older Dell D820 with a Nvidia Quadro GPU, but that is a drafting GPU and not very good for games.

I recommend the Gateways from BestBuy. They go on sale every other week for $450. They have Core 2 Duo processors and Radeon graphics , 320 gb harddrives . 15.6" 720p screens and 3 gb ram.

Can't go wrong with them. I have 2 :)

You can get a pimped HP Mini 311 for under $500. I'm sure the Atom N280 (1.66 Ghz) and the ION chip can handle your old games.

I hear OSX runs nicely on it ;)

I don't know much about bad computers (especially laptops), talk to me when your budget is $1000 and you want a desktop instead. That's what you're supposed to be gaming on.

The second one is better but I don't know if it goes on sale or not.

The first one was on sale for $429 two weeks ago. There is a slightly better model with the Core2Duo that goes on sale and I don't think it is on the website. Check your Sunday paper add.

these are the types of old games that run fine on my old dell D810(it has ATI X300 or X600 graphics and a 1.73 Centrino CPU), just looking for more speed in every day tasks, and a decent G-card.
